Since everyone here but Tomco is Asian, just thought I'd give a heads up since I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere....
Last week my mom was leaving the NE T&T and was approached by an Asian man and a woman asking directions to Peter Lougheed Hospital, which she explained how to get to. The woman said she was very thankful for my mom's help and proceeded to try and hug her.
My mom heard on the Chinese radio or read in the Chinese newspaper about a series of pickpockets that have been going around stealing necklaces off of people so she immediately suspected this and grabbed her necklace and pushed back. She told her not to touch her, but the lady kept pushing for a hug. Then my mom asked the lady what was in her hand and she was holding a cheap necklace that she said she wanted to give my mom as a gift and she kept trying to push it onto her but my mom kept resisting. Eventually the lady backed off but somehow in the pushing she still managed to unclasp my mom's necklace and get it off of her. My mom followed these people back to their car but she kept insisting she didn't take anything the whole time. They were arguing back and forth the whole time until someone in the parking lot asked what was going on and the lady gave up and gave my mom her necklace back and they took off.
She said they were a man and a woman posing as husband and wife and there was another man waiting in the car. She described them as fast speaking Asians that looked sort of Filipino but darker, so I'm wondering if they were Cambodian? The vehicle they drove off in was navy coloured.
Apparently they managed to scam my uncle's friend at New Asia too, but he wasn't as fortunate and didn't realize anything was missing until much later.
Anyone see or hear anything like this?
