Default What should my job title be....

    Hey beyond,
I'm being asked what my job title should be since we have someone taking over my current position and me "moving up". Current title is Superintendent. Not sure if that's a correct title with what I do, but I picked it, so that's what it was. What is something above that, but not as high as vp? Let's hear some....both real and made up are encouraged. I essentially run a division of a construction company.

If you run the division, why not VP of :division: cause that what you are. Who do you report to? A C-suite title? Cause maybe if it’s a VP then they should be a COO or something. Move everyone up! If not, then AVP?

In my eye a superintendent is the guy in charge of the project formen. So he's handling planning and problem solving for multiple field operations.
Am operations manager or VP operations might be above that. If you use a VP title you should be doing some business planning and "executive" stuff not just handling operations.
Could use a director title too. Operations director.

I think ES is right. Forman -> Superintendent -> Manger is my general presumption of titles. Divisional Manager, District Manager, Operational GM. Something along those lines.

TL;DR - Director of [group/capability area] if you're in corporate, and manager if you're in construction.

One company I worked at back in my engineer days, the superintenants reported to the Construction Manager.

I've worked with a lot of organizations in energy, natural resources, and a couple that had construction divisions. typically the person under a VP is "Director of [x]". I've also seen "Head of [x]" report to VP.

I really hate c-suite titles when they are not warranted.

My boss is the owner...the title he gave himself is VP of business development. That's why I don't think VP in my title will fly. GM was floated by him, but he told me to think about it and get him some other suggestions. I will talk to him about changing his title too. Maybe I could be a Jr. VP of operations?

Your company isn't big enough to have junior and senior vp titles.

Best and most misleading title I ever had was "Well Construction Manager".
I didn't manage any people. We didn't have a well construction division, or any products marketed under that banner.

    President of Operations

Since obviously anything with VP in the title is out.
