Thie historical connection to alberta that pre dates 1900 is the key for harvesting rights for metis people. Its worth adding that harvesting rights start from central alberta to the nwt border. There are no harvesting rights from roughly red deer all the way to the southern border.
Id be curious to know what prescription programs you have for being metis? My wife is metis, her family all have connections to alberta from pre 1900. There are no additional prescription programs for them that we are aware of.
There is nothing for dental. You dont get tax exemptions on vehicles, or on the reserve or get cheap smokes. This is all restricted to full status people. As someone mentioned some of the best benefits are related to getting hired on certain jobs or when bidding on contracts if you have your own company.
MNA of alberta does have a lot of interesting programs they roll out quite often if you are poor. Things like rental assistance, renovation grants(no need to repay), mortgage down payments and many other bonuses. Overall, perfect for your kids if they decide to move out early or need help with getting a down payment for their first place before they are making too much $$. Overall, follow MNA as they have all sorts of programs that come out, mostly minor but can make a difference for some families.
My kids have their MNA card but are full status. They all have their harvesting rights, they get some free books in the mail thanks to MNA but that's about it. They'll get all sorts of grants for school and such but that's not happening anytime soon.
Fun fact, if your mom thinks shes metis and it dates back to Ontario. You should check into it... there's a big legal battle over the fake metis groups in ontario. Some have recently been recognized in the last few years but historically, there are no metis groups in ontario. Lots of lawsuits happening in ontario as the govts just granting special status to random groups who claim metis heritage. Odds are if this is where your heritage comes from you will not qualify for metis harvesting rights.
