Default Who here has a metis status card?

My mom has finally filed for her status. My grandpa is full on native, mom is about ¾ and then me ½ or whatever, so she's almost done wait8ng for her card and now it's time to get mine she says.

My question for anyone that has one on here, what are the benefits of actually having this card? What about the benefits for my kid, since I'll likely go that route as well.

Can anyone chime in? Google only gives me a bit, I'd like to hear it from the source.

They cover some extra healthcare benefits, free fishing / hunting (some restrictions), cheaper gas on the res, kid might benefit from some $ for school. I think if you buy a vehicle and take delivery on a reservation you don’t have to pay gst.

Edit: Apparently this might not apply to Metis status.

Put it in job applications at big companies and you can help their ESG scorecard by hiring you.

Suncor would eat that shit up.

Even better incorporate and now you count as an indigenous corp for procurement purposes.

I thought "Status Card" was a thing for "Indians" and that Metis people kind of got fucked out of the same benefits that the "Status Indian" card gives.
There may be a different card for Metis, but I didn't think it was the same as a Status Card.

I have mine. My mom's side is Manitoba Metis, but because we've lived in AB since 1982 my card is from the Metis Nation of Alberta.

I believe the benefits vary province to province but I could be wrong. Some of my cousins that stayed in Manitoba got some pretty huge grants and scholarships for post-secondary. Not sure if the AB grants are as generous but there are definitely some you could look into.

There's programs for prescription coverage and some other health stuff too if you don't already get some from your employer. They even have some limited housing assistance via some rent subsidy if you're REALLY hurtin'.

For harvesting rights you have to show historical and current connection to Metis harvesting areas. It's not as simple as getting a Metis card and then you can go hunt whenever and wherever you want.

I've never actually used any of the programs they offer so can't speak from direct experience.

Trying to get proper information from my mom is like pulling teeth, but she did say she's pretty sure that we are Ontario Metis, which is surprising to me, but apparently a ton of my bloodline is down there, I don't know anyone from there.

I'll find out more on Wednesday I guess, but im really just hoping it can help my son out in school when he's ready. I don't care about harvesting or hunting, I don't do that shit.

Plus if the kid needs to have his invisalign longer or any other big dentistry stuff that isn't covered by my benefits, maybe it could help.

Thie historical connection to alberta that pre dates 1900 is the key for harvesting rights for metis people. Its worth adding that harvesting rights start from central alberta to the nwt border. There are no harvesting rights from roughly red deer all the way to the southern border.

Id be curious to know what prescription programs you have for being metis? My wife is metis, her family all have connections to alberta from pre 1900. There are no additional prescription programs for them that we are aware of.

There is nothing for dental. You dont get tax exemptions on vehicles, or on the reserve or get cheap smokes. This is all restricted to full status people. As someone mentioned some of the best benefits are related to getting hired on certain jobs or when bidding on contracts if you have your own company.

MNA of alberta does have a lot of interesting programs they roll out quite often if you are poor. Things like rental assistance, renovation grants(no need to repay), mortgage down payments and many other bonuses. Overall, perfect for your kids if they decide to move out early or need help with getting a down payment for their first place before they are making too much $$. Overall, follow MNA as they have all sorts of programs that come out, mostly minor but can make a difference for some families.

My kids have their MNA card but are full status. They all have their harvesting rights, they get some free books in the mail thanks to MNA but that's about it. They'll get all sorts of grants for school and such but that's not happening anytime soon.

Fun fact, if your mom thinks shes metis and it dates back to Ontario. You should check into it... there's a big legal battle over the fake metis groups in ontario. Some have recently been recognized in the last few years but historically, there are no metis groups in ontario. Lots of lawsuits happening in ontario as the govts just granting special status to random groups who claim metis heritage. Odds are if this is where your heritage comes from you will not qualify for metis harvesting rights.

Its maybe worth clarifying your moms status. You keep referring to metis status but is that what your moms applying for? Or is she applying for full on treaty status? If there's a chance she's full status "Indian" the metis card is not needed. Metis status is nowhere near the same as full status for what benefits you would get.

This is interesting. I'm not 100% sure about any of what my mom is saying, neither is she. I'll find out Wednesday when I talk to someone about it. All I know about Ontario is that my last name is all throughout that province, rarely ever seen here, so I dunno. Interesting though.

Maybe it was Manitoba that has prescription coverage. It varies province to province.

You have to provide genealogical proof of Metis ancestry to get it. It was a quite the process at the time we did it.

My dad got his card and those are all things that he gets. Though maybe it's because First nations vs Metis is different? I was under the impression they were similar but sounds like I was mistaken on that part.

Should be fun to learn a bit more of your family history. Did you say your grandpa is full status or he's metis?

It's definitely a different process. Courts have rules metis are for all purposes of the law an "indian" but the same rights haven't been provided yet.

For anyone metis the biggest benefit they could see would be the dental/health coverage. Or the possible tax exemptions for business that full status Indians own and can take advantage of.
