@dubhead , don't count on any money from that. The lawyers will get the meaningful share in a fight.

I'm way less "me" than people give me discredit for.

Best advice I know is to make sure the estate is as small as possible. Sell as much property as possible and give away the proceeds before death. Give money to charity, or kids, or grandkids or whatever. Shrink that estate, then there's less to fight over.

Depending on your relationship with the in-laws, you might be able to have a pretty honest discussion with them.
Giving it all away before you die definitely fixes 95% of the issues that arise. Can't contest this at all.

She better be loaded to bother dealing with all that for a 2.9% share of an estate lol
Is the 2.9% his share or is it 1.45%?
Just wondering how far you went on the fractionation.

Quarter section of marginal sparsely planted crested wheatgrass in Alberta is definitely not a quarter section in Southern Ontario.

Advice so far seems good, nothing else to add.
    Cocoa $10,000 per tonne.

I don't have any particular advice on this, but I will agree it's crazy how people turn in situations like this.

My dad's parent's passed ~10 years ago. They had no real savings & basically the estate was their house & whatever possessions they had. Only 2 kids - My dad & his sister, so sell house/stuff & easy-peasy 50/50 right? Good lord no - Both of them fought over everything right down to the pre-planned funeral... They still haven't spoken since it AFAIK.

There was a provision for us 3 grandkids getting a percentage too - I told them all I wanted was one of my grandma's Ukrainian hand-painted nesting doll sets and my cousin should take the rest as she was their care giver in their later years since she lived a block away. My dad & sister proceeded to fight for "what was rightfully mine", sigh.

In the end I washed my hands of it - Showed up once to move a bunch of furniture. They sat on the property forever and that ate into the final value big time. After all was said & done, I literally got a cheque for $800 in the end.

As you can imagine, I'm not looking forward to dealing with anything related to my parents...
