Loved northland mall in tonight’s episode. I went to Churchill so I grew up in that mall.
Came to make the same comment.
The Last of Us Northland has better stores/arcade/food court than peak Northland.

I also thought figured anything with a second floor was just CGI (except for the escalator scene, which is at the north end of the mall).

Anything with 2 floors was the core. So the initial entry, the escalator was 100% the one that runs alongside Harry Rosen, and walking down the 2 story hallway with an `ESPRIT` of all things on the left hand side. Everything else IIRC is Northland.

The escalator is northland, up to winners, the only spot that’s 2 stories there. The harry rosen escalator is a single not a dual.

I have never really been to northland - Although I did recognize the core. The CGI always has me double taking wondering where it's been filmed, adds a layer of fun.

What happened with the Subway logo - who fucked that up lol

Fair enough, it's been a while. But definitely the intro, and walking around on the two floors.

Here’s a shot of the 2 floors from the episode.

    Here’s northland mall.

Width, store overhang, and flooring matches. Even the opening scene, the bottom floor is northland. Like I said, the core does not have any of this railing. I don’t think any of it was the core. Just good cgi.

Peak northland had wizards castle (smaller than the arcade in the show tho) and an awesome (for the time) theater where golds gym was. I watched a lot of awesome movies there so lots of nostalgia. Food court had the Koya Japan aka edo Japan ripoff beside mucho nacho on the show. Don’t forget San Francisco across from wizards castle which is 100x better than Spencer’s. So I’d argue it was equivalent if not better haha.

Sounds like it was actually another location alltogether:
    https://www.insider.com/the-last-of-...-design-2023-2

According to Paino, the show's crew built out the entire mall, which was a "stripped to sell" property located in Canada.

All in all, Paino told Insider that the crew built approximately 40 stores, creating them "from scratch" only to dress them in 20 years of desiccation and rot.

The carousel, too, was a challenge. While there was originally one in the mall, it was sold when the mall went out of business.
Unless Northland was already stripped to sell, and previously had a carousel I never knew about? Everything I thought was already wrong, so I have no ground to stand on at this point.

Northland was closed at the time of filming and ready for demo before they used it for the show. There was a carousel there but it was much smaller, and closer to the food court. On the show it sat in between eb games and shoppers. Like I said, you could see the set from Best Buy when they were building it.

Edit - article confirms they cgi’d second floor. Pretty cool.

I mean, I literally said I expected to be wrong, so..? I knew they shut down Northland for filming, but I didn't realize it was expected to be closed anyways, regardless of filming?

It's crazy how much they change with CGI that you can't even tell in actuality where the place is. I didn't know which mall it was but I made a comment to the wife that it looks like Marlborough Mall on the regular. lol.

Cool seeing that ESPRIT store...brought back high school memories.
Marlborough Mall isn't even that bad. Westbrook, Northland and North Hill are all worse.

It was slated for redevelopment into an open air mall (like Beacon Hill, etc). Demolition of the middle section started shortly after they filmed.

That episode was great trying to figure out all the spots in Northland mall. One of my favorite spots was the scene in the food court when they went in the back where Riley was living, as they passed the Subway I was thinking to myself that's where the Taco Time was and lo and behold that's where they put the 'Macho Nacho'. Just funny thinking that the place was actually a Mexican fast food place in real life.

I would've given my left nut for an arcade that looked like that.

Disappointed. I expected you to say that it was southcenter mall or something.

Was definitely northland. That Best Buy is my go to. We saw the set being built through the doors even tho the mall had closed down.
It was northland, I was an extra in this episode and was in northland. Was crazy seeing how the CGI added to it versus how it looked in person/the episode which people have already commented on, Rather amazing to be honest.
