I would have to agree that adding Kyushu is quite a trek. Fukuoka itself has an absolutely fantastic food scene, and a few touristy things but Kyushu itself has most of the attractions and it takes awhile to get anywhere - with a car or training.

Kyushu was a huge highlight for us but can require a lot of patience because of the travel involved.

Okinawa would be incredible, looks amazing but have never been.

Another side quest is going up to Nagano. Very peaceful, low-key place, great food and they have the snow monkeys which the kids would like. A shinkansen goes up there, even a baller version! And would keep you in the JR East area.

We are going for 2 weeks, another family might be coming with us so it will also depend on where and what they want to do.
2-3 full days on each location should be enough for us though as we have been to Japan before but I agree on not planning too many places in a short time frame.

Depending if the other family bails on us, we might also fly somewhere in SE Asia for some beach time for a week.

Thanks for the Nagano tip, will add that on the list of possible places to visit.

Just came back and want to update on e-sim for Japan.

Airalo and Ubigi both worked well. But Airalo is only 4G where Ubigi is 5G wherever is available.

What really got strange is travelling into Korea. Airalo want picture and travel doc before releasing a SIM where Ubigi doesn't. But e-sim from one of the e-sim booth at Incheon is best bang for $, $26 for unlimited data.
