    Default New Tial Wastegate Upgrade

Due to the sudden internal destruction of my deltagate causing unlimited boost, we had to do emergency surgery on the 944. Luckily, soloracer had a Tial wastegate handy, and with the help of Marc slavin' over the weekend, we got the car up and running, ready for Monday track day! Here are the pics of the new wastegate. Much better lookin' than the Deltagate it replaces!

Yea, no time to install that little Supertrapp wastegate muffler, so it's hella loud right now when the thing opens up!

I don't know if you made it to the oct 6 beyond.ca meet at silver city, I had the black TII with the Tial bov and wastegate, the bov is a really nice piece, expensive but nice, its built far better than the other bov's on the market, however its not much of a noise maker..
Soloracer has the 46mm in his 944, a nice really big wastegate, overkill for a 944, but a nice gate nonetheless..
Rage: what boost controller are you using? The gate works much better with both ports plumbed properly..Maxt

Using the AVC-R. Rock solid boost control. Just gotta know how to set it up properly =).

Yeah, the avcr doesn't give you the dual port option like the greddy and hks controllers, which doesn't make alot of sense for a modern controller..
Its not really the total psi or set psi where you see the advantage, it won't cause or decrease boost hunt or creep, if you datalogged and plotted your boost curve, you would see that the wastegate cracks early when its run with only one side of the diaphragm, having the second port hooked up and controlled with a controller that can use it, keeps the spring side pressurised to keep the valve closed right to the boost point, substantially decreasing boost lag, and increasing the sharpness of the curve.
There is probably a way to do it with the AVCR, however I have not gone down that road.
Although I have boost control via my profec a or my haltech ecu, and soloracer is using a profec b, that has sharpness control of the wastegate, the advantage of the dual port wastegate is that it gives you more than just the "one dimension" boost control of total psi, it effectively allows you to change your torque curve by changing the speed at which boost builds. This is a very nice option to have when you have a car that either hooks up well or doesn't hook up well,if your curve is to steep and the tires break loose upon every shift, simply soften the curve, but keep the total psi up to give you your peak torque and hp to maintain your ET and trap speed, the other nice thing is its a nice easy fix for cars that have excessive turbine backpressure greater than the wastegate spring strength..Maxt

I'm running a K27/8 on my 89 944 turbo. So far the most I've run is 15 psi of boost where I was running lean. I've since upgraded to larger injectors and different chips so I anticipate next year I should be able to push up to 20 psi of boost.

One important thing to note - and it's a pet peeve of mine - is that boost numbers mean jack shit if you are not comparing the same turbo's. For example, the huge turbo that Max has in his RX7 will flow way more air at 10 lbs than my K27 does at 15 lbs. He will also make more power at 10 lbs than I do at 15 (I put down 280 rwhp/307 ft-lbs of torque at the dyno at 15 lbs). I just get tired of guys saying how their car is the shit because it's making "40 lbs of boost" and then you look at the turbo and it's the size of a hockey puck and lucky if it will flow enough air to get 200 hp. Think of it like this, as Max once told me, if you had a garden hose that was putting out a stream of water at 100 psi and sprayed someone with it he's going to get wet right? Now take a culvert and fill it full of water and dump it on someone - it might only be at 1 psi but damn you are getting to get wet in a hurry. Understand now why boost pressure is pretty much a meaningless number to quote when talking about different turbos?
