When the engine is under that kind of stress, it will burn some oil. Part of the reason is because your oil will get much hotter when your engine is under stress, and will become less viscous, so more of it will get by the rings. Although I'm sure there are other reasons why it uses more oil on the track.
Keep with the synthetic, synthetic does not cause your car to leak more oil. That is a myth. If somebody's car leaks more oil after they put synthetic in, they already had a leak, and the conventional oil was masking it, by plugging up the hole.
In my opinion, it's better to replace whatever gasket is leaking, and run synthetic for the protection, than to band-aid it, and switch back to conventional.
Very good point however is it not true that you shouldnt switch right from conventional to synthetic. Instead you should make it a gradual switch and move to a blend then to synthetic afterwards
