    Default HAWC 2 lottery BS...

Seen the commercial ?? The announcer says " HAWC 1 is overdue for major maintenance"

What BS !! If that's the case , the helicopter should not be flying !
It's a very serious crime to fly an aircraft that has not regular maintenance checks done on it, especially "major maintenance" !

It's just a ploy to get you to buy tickets.

I'm also suprised that the aircraft requires a major overhaul right at the same time Calgary holds it's biggest public event .That's poor planning.

If we really do need another helicopter , why not use the money from all the hugely jacked-up fines they are collecting ??

Every day I drive by Tim Horton's on Mcknight and 12th st.
There's always 3-4 cop vehicles parked there.Crime in this city can't be that bad. HAWC 1 attends quite a few PR events .Perhaps they should cut those events out and save the flight time for actually fighting crime.

Do we really need another Police helicopter ??

Calgary has 1 but yet bigger cities than us, dont have one and they still function alot better than Calgary.

Its just another reason to get money for stupid "toys" for Calgary.

The announcer has just made it seem a bit more urgent. In fact there was an article in the herald right before they did the lottery that said that hawc1 is due for a maintenance "soon", not "overdue". It'd be nice to have two helicopters in our city, it will cut down on more cruiser chases and overall make the city safer for everyone.

It will also provide southern alberta with another tool against forest fires, and other emergency duties that Hawc1 currently sees.

Calgary has the most advanced police helicopter in North America. We don't need another one. What a waste of money.

calgary isnt a big city. it doesnt even NEED one helicopter. having the 1 doesnt hurt though, but if they need to hold lotteries to fund this one, how the hell will they afford a second? my second point is, taxes are already payed in calgary. if there isnt money for a chopper in the budget, then there shouldnt be a chopper. its a scam to ask people to pay more of the AFTER TAX dollars to fund a public service.

Does the CPS publish any data on HAWC 1 's operations ??
I would be very interested to see how many chases HAWC 1 is involved with, and how many incidents where the criminal was caught soley because of HAWC1 .The TV reports often say when HAWC 1 assisted, but that doesn't mean much.
One helicopter is a good idea, but 2 ??

Airspace regulations require that planes need a complete maintenance check every 5-10 years (can't remember which exactly). Which means the helicopter/plane needs to be taken apart completely so everything can be inspected. Obviously this would take a lot of time. 3-6 months if I can remember reading it right.

They did a similar lottery to get the money to buy the first one, and there's a similar one every year to support the STARS helicopters.

Look at it this way. At least they're not forcing you to buy the ticket or raising taxes. If you want to support them, go ahead and buy the ticket. If you don't support it, don't buy.

Personally I think that HAWC2 would make Calgary safer and keep people from thinking twice before thinking they can outrun the cops.

It will also be useful for tracking down B&E type crimes as many perpetrators are generally on foot and dont exactly stay within the roadways.

I think the lottery is the best way to raise money since it reduces the tax burden from the tax payers.

IMO- I think Calgary is safe enough. Its getting to the point where the police force is asking to hire more officers by sticking "FOR HIRE" stickers on their units. How safe can you be? We already have a safe city compared to all the other cities in Canada.

How often do you hear about a guy who is fleeing away and HAWC 1 not capturing them?
    Slim to none.
We dont need 2 helipcopters, we dont live in Los Angeles.

i dont understand what everyone is complaining about, its making your streets safer, and its not costing you a penny, unless ofcourse you DECIDE to purchase a ticket.

Shouldn't they worry about maintenence for the first one instead of buying a new one.

just think of the lottery for the HAWCS when they have two.

    20 km/hr over the limit = 1,000.00 fine

Calgary has very very very little crime and incredibly efficient road ways. Another Helicopter is not needed.

I watched a show on the police and what they use to help track down suspects last year and one segment stated that the city of Phoenix (I'm pretty sure that's what city the host said) has 7 police helicopters. He said it was for a population of about 3 million.
