Well when i took CPSC 231 I missed every lecture almost, Deur is just that shitty, he cant teach worth shit. Expect to learn things on your own. He writes amazingly hard Midterms finals and assignments. CPSC 231 is not an easy class if you have never programed before. If you can pass CPSC 231 on your own without cheating then you are in the right place.

    231 with Deur... lol
You could tape overhead pens to your fingers, and scratch the overhead sheet randomly, and it would be easier to read than his writing

I used www.xploiter.com to get through some of that class.

And for WAY better notes and practice exams, check out
    www.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~becker/231
    i think that's becker's page...
if you are ever prompted for a name/pass it is scanner/pixel... the name of her dogs.. those poor dogs.

Yea, im trying to major in CPSC, but i think im beginning to hate it.. and im only in 233...

The objective of CPSC 231 is to weed out people so I think Duer is teaching it this way on purpose. I had him for 231 and back then we used a language called Maranda and I had no problems with him at all. Some people come straight out of high school and expect the same kind of one on one teaching at university they are going to be in for a surprise. If you're not intuitive enough to pick up a textbook and figure it out yourself then that class isn't for you.

ABORT COMP.SCI IMMEDIATELY. I REPEAT. ABORT COMP.SCI IMMEDIATELY!!

I remember back in the fall of 1999 I was taking 231 with Don or Doug, certainly not Deur(fear the name!!) and it was a blast. He was working for a software company at the same time and had real work experience which helped the students a lot.

Although one third of the students were screened out by the first midterm and only less than 300 were left by the final (initially we had 1100 students), I was glad to walk away with C+.

Then the winter came and a bitch called 'Becker' was trying to scare some of the survivors with her CS233 material. Man, was I in for surprise. She would always only bring a piece of paper with the next assingment on it if not just bare hands, and tried to explain what we were supposed to do. Basically it was like, "Read these chapters and if you don't understand, go to my website and read some of the stuff on the links, and if you still don't understand ask your TA."

The problem was, the TA's didn't always know everything. And there were people lined up at the TA's desk asking the same question over and over. So, what are you supposed to do when nobody can help you?

After failing to submit two of the assignments in time and screwing up both the midterm and final, I got an F. I repeated it the next year, I slightly improved and got D. Could not proceed to the next courses without getting a better grade than C-.

I figured at that time that I wasn't Bill Gates nor John Carmack for that matter, and maybe computer science wasn't for everybody. I'm just happy that I can build my own computer and install some cool games!

So, if you don't think you are a world-class computer programming genius, leave it to those from the third world countries who would be glad to do the same work for you at $4 to $6/hr rate or even less when competition runs high. I could simply not see the future in the IT industry, at least from an employee's point of view. There were over 200 student applicants for three internship positions in the following summer. Get the picutre?
(By the way, many of the big name software companies are making huge profit by outsourcing jobs overseas.)

Oh, and my last comment: see if you can handle Math 271! Hahaha, I bet you will cry like a little baby for help even before the midterm and pray for death by the final and you will hate the word 'discrete' for the rest of your life!!!!!

WOW!! I ve had Becker before, shes ok now. I heard she cleaned up her act and is actually teaching now. CPSC is not bad for people who are able to learn by themselves and are some what passionate about computers but if you 're not doesn't mean its not for you. Just be sure to do things yourself. And yes math 271 is hard, some people can do it, and the other 99% will have to work at it.

Yep ... I'd listen to everyone here and drop CPSC right now if you're having trouble with 231 but that's seriously weak game. You think 231 is tough. You ain't even know what's ahead of you.

What you n00bs gotta understand is those core classes, especially the early ones, are designed to weed out the incompetent ones. There's courses like this in pretty much all the disciplines. If you can get by 413, then the degree is pretty much yours.

Drop out while it's still early and you can still savage what's left of your GPA and go into business or management or whatever. If you want something to do with computers, try MGIS. I know a guy who was so weak that he dropped out of CPSC because he couldn't handle 355 and went into MGIS. I hear he's doing alright for himself now.

Also, if you ain't the type to like staying up til buck late at night, an extremely high workload, dealing with an enormous amount of stupidity and like to sleep, I'd suggest you drop out too. Cuz the software engineer courses will drive you off the wall.

On the flip side, I know tons of people who've made it far by copying others and lack game in general. As one of my ex TAs said to me, "If you can make someone's code work with yours, then kudos to you."

Nobody really went to any of his classes when I had him. I only stuck around once in a while if I was waiting for a friend. He had one of those big ass auditoriums that filled 400 people and there couldn't have been more than 50 people per class. Only until midterms did you realize how many people were supposed to be there! Hahaha!

Well, I didn't have him for 231/233 but I had him for CPSC 565 and 607 and I thought he was a very good teacher.

When I had him, it was actually his first semester teaching, I believe. I'm sure he's pretty good now. In fact, those who had taken AI with him said he was pretty good; much better than Denzinger.

I remember i was in the math sciences lab 2 week ago. I was logged onto one of the first year computers on thursday(i was helping a friend do their assignment) so it was kinda busy since the assignment was due the next day. This mother fuckin little punk ass slut logged me out becsaue i wasnt there for like 15 minutes though i was standing no more then 30 feet away. Well i didnt really care, but i asked him "did you logg me out?" because I wasnt sure if they had or was surfing the internet on my account. Then he says yeah you werent here and all this shit then i said alright, seeing that i didnt care. Then this fuckface says "yeah, it better be alright". what a fuckin bitch!!! if ever i see this kid out side of school I will stomp on his fuckin face. btw this kid looks like he has not showered in months and wears a fuckin black studded arm bracelet (like the goths do). i m sure i ll see him in the next few days in the lab.
