Default speed sensor on a 1991 Honda Prelude 4ws

    Hi,

Does anyone know where I can find the speed sensor on a 1991 Honda Prelude 2ltr 4ws? If so, any ideas on where I can find info on how to remove it and replace it?

    thanks,
    Eric

You mean the speedometer cable? I don't know about Preludes too much, but my 91 Civic is a cable driven speedometer. Theres a cable that goes from the back of the actual gauge cluster to the rear of the tranny.

hmm... no cable on the 1991 one... its all electronic, there are only wires going into the back of the speedo in the dash, and the engine light is on. The ECU reports code 17.

Basically, my speedo doesnt work... cant find the speed sensor in the engine compartment.

    Any help appreciated,
    Eric

The speed sensor is on the right side of the engine. It is a 3 pin connector. Wire colors are Black, Yellow, and White/Blue.
First check the 10 amp gauge fuse in the dash fuse block.
    Disconnect the 3 pin harness.
    Using an ohmmeter:
1 Check for continuity between black wire and ground. If OK go to next step. If not repair the open circuit or check for bad ground.
    2. Turn on ignition and check the voltage between the yellow wire and ground. If OK, go to next step. It should read battery voltage. If not check for open circuit.
    3. With ignition on check voltage between the White/Blue wire and ground. It shloud be about 5 volts.
    4. If all checks OK replace the sensor.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks Strugari!!!

I think I have found it, but its burried amongst a lot of other stuff. Do you know the list of stuff I have to remove in order to get to the sensor. it looks like there might be power steering pipes in the same vicinity... do I need to bleed these?

    thanks again,
    Eric

    Default finding a speed sensor

I got lucky to find the 'how to' right away. But where do I find a speed sensor for my 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si. I've searched about 8 websites. Most don't have speed sensors, but plenty of oxygen sensors!

My local HONDA dealer quoted me ~A$320 for a brand new one, fully imported and delivered from Japan.

I ended up finding one at my local Japanese wrecker for $65.

    Good luck,
    Eric
