Default Whats the process for buying a used car?

I'm buying a beater (well the guy buying my car is throwing it in as part of the deal) to hold me over until my new car is delivered in a month. I've never bought used before, whats the process?

Its a '91, do I need a safety inspection or some shit? How much $?

Just go with him to the registry to change ownership? How much is that?

    Help the n00b!

If you're buying and registering the car in the same province you won't need a safety inspection. All you need is the transfer of ownership portion of the insurance registration. Hope that helps.

Get a bill of sale or the third part of his registration. He does not need to be there with you.

For the inspection you might need one seeing as the vehicle is 14 years old. Depends on the insurance company. They give you some time to do it so I wouldn't worry too much if you are only driving for a month.

To register your "new" car, you need two things.

    1) First a bill of sale of some sort (there's usually a generic form that you can tear out of the Autotrader or you can use the simpler one that's on the back of the old registration form from the previous owner).
    2) The second thing you'll need is proof of insurance for the vehicle, that is, a copy of the pink slip.

Without these two items, they won't let you register your vehicle. As far as the insurance inspection goes, it depends on what your insurance company requires before they issue you the pink slip.

give him money, he signs transfer form, you sign transfer form. Then you take the transfer form and the vehicle registration down to any insurance place. Registration is $30 plus you pay tax on whatever price you paid for the car. Then its just a matter of swapping your existing insurance onto the car or insuring the car new from scratch. Those are the rpices in BC though, I'm not sure if it differs in AB or not

tax? I've never paid a tax on the price of a vehicle?

Pick up 2 copies of a bill of sale from ur local Registry (they're free) or just use the part of the registration. Call ur insurance co. insure it then have them fax a temporary pink card to the registry. Then go down to the registry with ur bill of sale and DL, register the car. If your insurance wants an inspection, they will tell u then they will fax an inspection form with ur temporary pink slip. If you're only insuring it for a month, screw the inspection, when you get your new car, just call ur insurance and tell them u want to cut the insurance off on it cuz u couldnt get it to pass inspection

They don't do the tax on a used vehicle in AB, but they do in ON and BC I believe.
