High Speed PT Crash Kills St. Louis Area Police Chief
St. Louis, MO / Thursday March 10 - Incident started when a man stole merchandise from a Walgreens at Gravois and Sappington. Police tried to pull over the suspect, but he would not stop.
Witnesses say police were not chasing the suspect's PT Cruiser when the accident occured.
The PT Cruiser crossed the center line at close to 100 mph, hitting the fire district Lincoln driven by Chief Jerry Buehne.
The force of the impact was so strong, the engine of the PT Cruiser was ripped out of the vehicle and left in the center lane.
Police and a man who worked nearby and saw the accident helped the suspect from his car. When he and other people at the scene pulled the man from the PT Cruiser, they also saw the merchandise stolen from Walgreens.
By the time they tried to help the fire chief from his car, fire personnel were on the scene and said he had been killed in the accident.
The PT Cruiser was not reported stolen. Police are only describing the suspect as a 44-year-old man from north St. Louis County.
