Don't worry about it, colonialism wasn't really that bad.
Canada is not immune from some seriously fucked up stuff in it’s past… Humans are shit in general.

I used to skateboard with Joe Buffalo who was in a residential school. There is a documentary about him: https://vimeo.com/432333213This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Thanks for sharing this. Blows my mind how this gets such little attention. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
This really blew my mind.
Also I cant help but to be ashamed of myself. I have been in this country for 15 years and I am just learning about residential schools and the history behind it, I honestly had to clue what a residential school even was.
I asked my mother in law who is a retired teacher about it, and just the way she calmly explained everything got me a bit uncomfortable. Like are you listening to what you are saying? it sounds so screwed up.
Tell me about it... This shit was still around when I was little and that blows my mind! While I am not FN, I have immediate FN relatives who went through this system. Super fucked up.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I was born in Canada and went to school in BC, in area full of existing reservations and native history, and I wasn't taught any of this in school. This first time I was told a residential school was still open when I was alive, I had to Google it because I thought it was malarkey. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Was saying the exact same thing to someone this morning. I didn't learn about it until I was completely finished with all schooling. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The remaining family members of mine who directly attended residential schools have passed on, but the stories they had were pretty horrific.
The nuns back in the day were fucking savage.
My great uncle was sharing a story with me this past weekend of some of the things he witnessed and were spoken of as he grew up in the Gleichen area where they had a residential school.
Apparently the School around Cochrane (Morley?) was known to be quite savage as well, he said "I'd like to see that place excavated as well".
My mother has also mentioned in the past the beatings they would receive from the nuns growing up in Whitehorse as well (Non residential school), they would be hit with bamboo sticks or the strap.
I grew up in Kamloops and this shit didn't surprise me at all. Is a very well known situation that was just glazed over. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I'm glad more info about residential schools is coming to light.

Am I the only one who was in school in the 90s-early 2000s and was taught that residential schools were 1) a thing and 2) really awful and many children died? Because I remember hearing about them a lot in Social Studies.
I remember it too..This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Yea it’s terrible what happened. No words. Really sad. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I’ve been scratching my head at this, I thought it was pretty common knowledge that kids died at these schools, and likely every single one has a site like this. Either a LOT of people weren’t paying attention or it’s a slow news cycle? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Ban religion.
I’m guessing people knew about it, but because of the news cycle, it’s being used as a “oh my god, I never knew this” so they can show outrage/be included. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It was in the curriculum for sure and in the news often enough before this that people knew about it already
