I have a Toshiba 57" Cinema Series HDTV and I was considering getting an upconverting dvd player for this as I have well over 220 DVDs. I noticed Rage mentioned it's not worth it if you have an older CRT style of TV to pick up one of these upconverting dvd players. If I was to get one for my Toshiba would I have a terrible picture quality or would it still be better than my progressive scan dvd player I'm currently using.
Another question if you don't mind. I noticed alot of these upconverting dvd players seem to have audio encoders that are in mp3/wma format.....does that mean these dvd players do not support Dolby Digital or DTS?! That would seem kind of odd to me considering a dvd tends to have amazing sound effects and if it's in mp3 or wma format it would sound quite bad.
It would pretty much look exactly the same as your existing player. Buy one and try it out. Your CRT naturally smoothens the picture, which is what the upconverting player attempts to do for fixed pixel displays.
All DVD players nowadays support DD and DTS outputs. As long as your receiver can support DD/DTS it'll work.
The mp3/wma just means if u burn wma or mp3 on a CD, it'll play it.

You get what you pay for, I used to like Toshiba until I started to work for Futureshop. We had one of those Toshiba HDDVD players hooked up, worked for a couple weeks. Not saying that something will go wrong with it, just a reminder that when a product is cheaper, there's usually a reason.Originally posted by awd
After reading a bunch of reviews on Upconversion DVD Players -- I decided on this Toshiba:

It was a toss up between this on, a Samsung, a Sony and an LG -- the Toshiba was the cheapest and had some of the best opions, including a free HDMI cable.
We have two of these units in the house. My parents bought 2 toshiba DLP's a few months ago (52" and 46")... bought one of the DVD players with the 52" TV and its been perfect so far, so we bought another one for the other TV... they've been flawless and we've been happy with them so far...Originally posted by awd

I picked up the LG on boxing day because it had a card reader. I can now transfer TV episodes I download to the DVD player to watch on the TV. I can also view pictures from my digicam.
You need to transfer TV shows?
There's network DVD players that connect to your computer, play files right off your media library.

Well, I would take a Toshiba product over a LG any day and the Sony model is garbage -- so I chose the Toshiba.Originally posted by Hakkola

I wasn't trying to be "cheap", it had the best reviews out of the 4 models, so I bought it. Looks great and works fine, if it craters I will return it to the bottom feeders at futureshop for a new one.

Good choice, I was considering getting one but it didnt pan out.Originally posted by dragonone
bought the oppo
I've been looking into one for awhile now and finally decided on one yesterday. I choose the Denon DVD-1930CI (also to match with my Denon Receiver). Its kinda on the expensive side for a upconvertor but its worth it!! But if you have a little more money to spend grab the Denon DVD-2930CI.
The Denons tend to have macroblocking problems on DLP displays so if you have one then id consider the Oppo which from what i ve read doesnt pretty well on the majority of the displays out there.
I m sure if you read many threads on the net most people will recommend the Oppo mainly because of its price.

Samsung Upconvert DVD Player (DVD-HD960)
Samsung's DVD-HD960 is a slim, elegant DVD player with multiple features. The super-slim, DVD-HD960 upconverts to 1080p/1080i/720p through HDMI cable single connection and boast a natural, clear picture, upconverted by way of DCDi by Faroudja (Directional Correlation De-interlacing).
I have a 42" 1080p monitor that I would be using it with.
https://onlybestrated.com
971 and 980 has the dcdi chip, 970 doesn't
only 980 does 1080p, and 971 only has dvi (comes with dvi-hdmi cable tho)
my display's only 1080i, so i went with the 971
ones at local retail stores are about 1-200, this is definitely worth it considering the amount of rave reviews it's received
but hey, on a small tv u might not b able to tell between 1080i or p, and the 99 one might look just as good as the 300 dv980. maybe someone can convince of u. I started my post with a question, but just went all out an bought one for xmas

just a quick question, thinkin about buying an upconverting dvd player. So the DVD player will upconvert normal discs to 720p, i plug the hdmi output to my receiver which says it has "1080p Compatible - Pass Through (Video Only)" I will get best quality sound through this connection? Then plug the pass through hdmi to tv and will get 720p resolution as well?
Well your receiver probably uses an older version of HDMI becasue it says (Video Only). It will only tranfser video. You will need to connect a seperate audio connection from the DVD player to the Receiver from what I understand.
You should be ok with the video transfer though.
Why not just pick up an actual HD DVD player? (Thought about a BD player but they are more expensive and so many of thier movies are hit or miss when it comes to quality) Santa brought me a Toshiba HD-A2 yesterday and so far so good! I'm more than impressed!
Btw. I am coming from a Panasonic S77 that I am willing to let go for a reasonable price
