Default Say goodbye to the VW Golf...

    and hello to the Rabbit.

In a surprise move, Volkswagen announced today that its all-new fifth generation Golf, which debuted at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, is going back to its roots with the original Rabbit nameplate for the U.S. and Canadian markets. The Rabbit will hop into the market in early summer, after its official introduction at the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. “The Rabbit was always exclusive to the U.S. and Canadian markets; while the rest of the world had the Golf, we had the iconic Rabbit,” said Volkswagen’s Director of Brand Innovation, Kerri Martin. “The reintroduction of the Rabbit represents Volkswagen’s commitment to this market and is a nod to the passionate North American enthusiasts who have an emotional connection with the Rabbit name.”

“Volkswagen customers want a relationship with their cars. Names like The Thing, Beetle, Fox, and Rabbit support this,” Martin added.

The Rabbit goes on sale this summer in both two and four-door versions, with pricing starting at $14,990 for the two-door. Standard features include an advanced ABS braking system, traction control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, air conditioning and anti-theft alarm system with remote locking. Always known for its value, this latest Rabbit is no exception, offering a high level of standard features and equipment at an attractive starting price.

The Rabbit was the first Volkswagen produced in the United States and its appeal grew rapidly, with sales of over 1.3 million in its 10-year lifespan. The Rabbit’s popularity can be credited to the wide array of standard features it offered at an attractive price. The 2006 Rabbit promises a return to the high-value, iconic status of the original.

“The Rabbit’s return to Volkswagen’s family is not an attempt to recreate the original car; today’s Rabbit is manufactured at our Wolfsburg production facility alongside the all-new GTI.”

The Rabbit, or Golf as it is well known throughout the rest of the world, is the world’s best-seller with over 25 million cars sold over five generations. This latest generation has already won more than 25 awards in more than sixteen countries. And, yesterday, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), announced that the 2006 Rabbit four-door received the Top Safety Pick, Silver award, based on the Institute’s frontal offset, side impact, and rear crash protection ratings.

Martin adds, “Even the name ‘Rabbit’ dramatizes the enhanced performance, playing off the car’s clever design, efficient size, agility and nimbleness. The Rabbit is back.”

I had to take a look at the date to see if that was an April fools thing. I just don't see that helping their image at all.

Neither do I. I don't know WTF they are up to really.
First of all I don't think many people can even remember wtf a Rabbit is.
Second...when you think of a Rabbit, what kind of image do you get in your head???? I see small, compact, cheap car. I don't think thats going to help VW sell the new MK5 at all.

Why such a big deal over a name change? It's pretty sad if changing the name of a car can change the number of units sold...

I wish they would go back to a more boxy hatchback style of car for the Rabbit/Golf/GTI/R32.

I love the look of the 75-79 Rabbits.

Haha, rename the Toureg to The Thing. It'll make evern more comical conversations.

Well they did advertise with a evil rabbit "FAST". But I really won't call it a Rabbit again. It worked when VW was cheap and most of the people are hippies.

Just think of the Chevy Nova (Or "No Va" or Does not Go) That had a HUGE impact on its sales one people figured that out.

Names definately make a difference. If they didn't, car companies wouldn't sue each other over naming rights and the like. They put LOTS of money into coming up with new car names...and their pretigious "old" names are worth quite a bit in brand equity as well....

That said, I REALLY hope that is a joke- about the Rabbit. I'm going to do a quick search and see what I come up with.

Apparently there is a new Fox out, but not in North America...

I used to own a 1987 VW Fox... It was my first car with a manual tranny, tons of fun!

Seems to me VW doesn't know what to do with their cars... bringing back the Rabbit, bringing back the Corrado too apparently (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=111203). What happened to the Phaeton anyways? Last I heard it was dropped due to poor sales?

Woop-dee-doo name change. It felt a little more special when it was the GTI rabbit but calling the whole line rabbit just... messed up.

Maybe someone in vee dub has a thing for beastiality?

wow the tittle of this thread scared me for a second...anyways, dont mind the name change and i dont think the rest of true dubbers do neither. afterall the mk1 rabbit gti is deffinately one of my favorite cars ever made and it was considered as the best gti untill the mk5 was released...in a way the new mk5 gti gets to take over the name "rabbit" and the reputation of "the best gti yet" from the mk1

i know its hard to understand but to me it makes sence

^I don't think you read it right. Fine, if they renamed the new GTI then it would be fine with me...BUT....the Rabbit name is going to all GOLF's.
