So my external harddrive had some smoke come out of it then died. I took it to future shop and after beating the shit out of it, they could not open it to extract the data and burn it onto DVD's for me. Does anyone recommend anyone for this?

There's a place in town called forensic evidence recovery or something. It's pricey... I think I paid $4g to recover a laptop HDD but they got everything off it onto several DVD's.

damn, Thats a little insane for me. I don't believe the harddrive itself is corrupt or anything, just that the power supply is fried. They didn't wanna push opening it anymore for fear of damaging the harddrive. But i'll call em and see what they have to say thanx, anyone else?Originally posted by rage2

(^porn)
Try taking into a place that isnt future shop, if its just the power supply, maybe a place more specialized can find the middle ground between not being able to do it, and payinng 4k for it.
so you can't open the hd yourself? or if you do think its the ps of the hd try to find another exact same hd and swap the ps.
i've used this place for work related hdd's..

good luck
The $4k price was because the head crashed and they needed to use a clean room to open it up to extract data. If it's just electronics, it's a lot cheaper.

No I can't open it, its seamless and I've followed all the schematics i have for it to get it open and its a no go still. By power supply i mean the actual circuit board that is bridged to the HD, not the AC adapter. And even if I could get another circuit, I can't get the damn thing open....Originally posted by GQBalla

thats why i'm asking here, I bought it there so I thought they'd at least have a clue. And its not porn...well not entirely true there is some porn on there but more importantly the pictures from the last 7 years of my life...
You could try and birdge it buy finiding another same HD wit the same firmware ... but it will be pita. SCSI would make life easy.Originally posted by Drew

I've used CBL Data Recovery with success.
Toronto is the only clean room I know off. Is there one in Calgary?Originally posted by rage2

I guess there is.
http://www.computerpi.com/
And in their FAQ here: http://computerpi.com/datarecovery.htm
It says:
How Much Does It Cost? Data Recovery is not cheap. In many instances, it is cheaper to redo work that has been deleted. For data recovery from hard drives, you can expect to pay an average of $800.00 - $3000.00. The average though, is $1500.00 - $2100.00 if we can do the recovery outside of the clean room. If we need to rebuild the drive or any components, we must use the clean room, and then the average is anywhere from $2500.00 - $3000.00.

I recommend forensic evidence recovery.. I went to school with the owner's kids.. good guy, and doesn't the job well.. he recovered a friend's hard drive for about 400 bucks.. but that was about 2.5 years ago so I don't know if their prices have increased.
Bring it to compusmart this week (before thursday) in deerfoot meadows, go to the back and ask for the russian dude, which would be me (don't feel like posting my name on board haha) and I will bust that fucker open for you and test to see if it works. All free of charge
