    Default Question about Router/Firewall

    I'm using a linksys BEFSR41 4 port router
how do i setup the proxy setting so i can use ICQ or some other P to P programs to transfer files?
is there a website that kind of teach or explain about this topic?

you can either choose to DMZ your computer specifically or disable the firewall completely and expose yourself effectively turning your router into a simple switch - those are the methods I remember anyways.

I believe that the linksys site has a FAQ on this one - they'd be the best to answer questions. I had the BEFSR41 a while back, but I've moved just a workgroup switch since and have firewall duties handled by a standalone symantec unit.

    DMZ Host

The DMZ Host setting allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet to use a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or Video-conferencing. To expose one computer, enter the computer’s IP address and click the Apply button. Inactivate DMZ by entering a zero (0).

ummm what's the site? I might be able to help you with the config, but I haven't used ICQ in years so I'd be doing it blind

If you set up the port forwarding properly, you don't need to DMZ your machine (because that would defeat the purpose of having the firewall in the first place). The trigger port for ICQ is TCP 5190, then set the open ports to whatever range you like. Make sure you set the same range in the ICQ setup as well. Post a screen shot of your firewall configuration screen and I can probably help you figure it out.

Thank You for your reply! but I don't understand "choose to DMZ" and how to "disable the firewall" or how to "turning your router into a simple switch".

I don't know who could do that in town, I don't know of anyone having done that kind of swap in calgary. Head to the canada forum at nasioc.com and ask around there, someone else might be able to answer it for you.

Here's a site with some excellent FAQS on configuring ICQ to work with port forwarding, and setting up your router.
