    Default Anyone buy gold coins?

I went into one of the big banks to ask about buying 1 ounce Maple Leaf gold coins. Gold was trading at around $920 an ounce at the time. They quoted me over $1020 to buy a coin and said if I wanted to sell, they would give me about $850. (I was looking for 10 coins).

Now I know that banks are always out to screw you but I wasn't expecting it to cost that much to trade.

I'm not looking for commemorative coins, just ounces of gold in coin form, so I think the Maple Leafs are the way to go.

So what kind of rates do local coin dealers charge? For example, I have heard that in Asian countries, buying and selling gold is fairly routine. So could I find a dealer in say, Chinatown who would sell me coins without totally bending me over?

You will always pay a premium buying gold and selling it at a discount. If you're REALLY into buying a physical ounce of gold, maple leafs are a good way locally. If you want to start trading it on the market, you can trade bullion ETFs or companies that hold strictly gold in inventory (gold trusts)

I have done quite a bit of business with albern coins. No complaints yet.

I've dealt with Albern too, but their premiums are too high. If you have any access to a US address, APMEX will destroy the price of any retailer in Canada.

Krugerrands, 20 Francs, Sovereigns, 4 Ducat, 100 Corona, 50 Pesos etc. give you more value for your money than Maples.

The 50 Peso is my personal favorite, 1.2 ounces and a lower premium than the Maples
