I went into one of the big banks to ask about buying 1 ounce Maple Leaf gold coins. Gold was trading at around $920 an ounce at the time. They quoted me over $1020 to buy a coin and said if I wanted to sell, they would give me about $850. (I was looking for 10 coins).
Now I know that banks are always out to screw you but I wasn't expecting it to cost that much to trade.
I'm not looking for commemorative coins, just ounces of gold in coin form, so I think the Maple Leafs are the way to go.
So what kind of rates do local coin dealers charge? For example, I have heard that in Asian countries, buying and selling gold is fairly routine. So could I find a dealer in say, Chinatown who would sell me coins without totally bending me over?
