Default Accident: Car ran into bus stop/house.

    Date: Sat Jun 27 17:40:35 2009
    Subject: Injury Accident
    From: Duty Inspector

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Just after 2:00 PM on Saturday June 28th, 2009, a Honda Civic
was eastbound on Richmond Rd. through 37 Street S.W. when the
lone 31 year old male driver suffered a suspected seizure and
rear-ended a car in front of him. The Civic then lost control
and left the road and drove onto the right sidewalk through a
glass bus shelter, striking an 60-70 year old woman standing
at the bus stop. The car then carried on, through a nearby
residential fence and came to rest against a house. The home
did not have any structural damage.

Both parties were transported to Hospital. The male suffered
a suspected seizure but is expected to recover. Remarkably,
the female pedestrian only received minor injuries. Had she
been sitting inside the shelter, her injuries could have been
fatal, as the shelter was completely demolished.

The occupant of the other vehicle originally rear-ended, was
    not injured.

    Obvioulsy, no charges are contemplated.

    Saw this today. Some pics.

Don't you hate it when your passengers say "Ooh, what's this??" and hit your nitrous button in traffic?

Pretty scary stuff. Saw the whole thing beginning to end. When the civic got close to the bus stop I was thinking no way it would hit it... there is a person there... It was going pretty fast, like 50km/h +

if you dont have one for a few years and a doctor signs off on you. Your allowed to get your license again. But it will be a few years anyway.

Yup. He drove to school everyday to teach. He also explained to us what to do in case he started having a seizure.. It never happened but it was scary.

Shitty to hear about the seizure and the old lady. At least they lived. People ALWAYS race from the west side of that intersection (travelling east) as the right lane ends just after the gas station entrance.

How tragic. Thats pretty bad. Seizures are no joke. I wish more funding was done on it.

Just because you have a seizure disorder, does not mean that you cannot drive. There are certain requirements that have to be met in order to get your licence, but it does not restrict you from driving forever.

It used to be that you had to be seizure free for one full year to be able to have a licence. They have since downgraded that to 6 months. You will be required to obtain a medical to get your licence every year, but you can still drive.

Good to hear everyone is okay, but you're right, he's going to need medical clearance before getting his license back.

Yep, the federal organization that maintains the medical standards for a drivers licence has lowered it.

If it was a one time only seizure, its not even 6 months seizure free, its 3 months.

good thing it was a civic, if it was a real car he might have caused some real damage.
