    Default CRA / Car allowance

Just a quick question - as I'm prepping for tax season; and cleaning up my monthly mileage summaries...

Receive a taxed car allowance from work; years ago my accountant told me I can't include mileage to/from work in my "work mileage"... But if I'm required to have my vehicle at work, shouldn't the trip to/from the office be accounted for as work not personal?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

Do what your accountant says or get a new accountant.

    The answer is...

You can't include mileage to and from work (first place you visit of the day). Driving to and from work is not part of your regular duties.

Or tell your company to raise your car allowance.

Just asking - we know how rules change... My thought was - if I'm required to have it at work - then surely being required to bring it to work with me requires me to drive it to work...

No that is right. Everyone is required to get to work so it does not matter what you use your vehicle for.

However, if you have a meeting on the way to the office, then that is work related and can be claimed.
