    Default Plumbing advice/tip needed.

I just installed a brand new vanity. By brand new I mean I had to assemble the drain trap from scratch since this is a brand new basement development.
The problem I'm having is that the drain leaks where the 1 1/4" metal drain pipe from the sink connects to the 1 1/2" abs via an adaptor. I noticed that no matter how tight I tightend the adaptor nut the 1 1/4" drain pipe could still slide in and out. Could it be that I have the wrong or a possibly defective adaptor? Is there a way to fix this without having to redo the trap assembly?
Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to avoid another trip to Rona to spend more money.

    Wrap teflon tape around it

Did you check to see if there was a "reducing Washer" in the 1 1/2" end before you started to tighten it up?

If you look inside the end you should see an either rubber or plastic washer that when you begin to tighten it cinches the two together.

    Hope this helps

Edit: It may be a Slip Joint Washer

He's right, there should be a circular flange, when you tighten the adapter, it squeezes it

    Here's a picture :

I thought of the teflon tape after my first post. I'll give it a try to see it will help. It's hard to tell in the picture, but the leaking is actually coming off the top of the nut not from the threaded portion so I'm not sure if the tape will help.
As far as the reducing washer, I don't recall if there was one in there or not. If there was, should the metal drain pipe piece be able to move at all once the nut is tightened? I know that I can still move it no matter how much I've got the nut tightened.

yeah sounds like that washer is missing, it should be pretty snug once it is tight

Also, did you put plumbing putty at the sink opening.

^Where the drain connects to the sink itself? I thought of doing the putty, but was reading that putty shouldn't be used on anything like ceramic or porcelain as it can leech and discolour the sink. Rule of thumb : putty on steel sinks, silicone on ceramic/porcelain.

I will bet there is no washer. If the washer was present then it would be very difficult to move the 1 1/4" pipe at all. I see you have an above counter sink so it should be fairly easy to lift it off and check for the washer. And putty is used in the old school plumbing systems unlike your application.

    Is this similar to yours?

Same concept. Thanks for the help everyone. At least I know what I need to do now. I lucked out and found the reciept in my "file pile" so I'm going to take the whole thing (trap and all) and see if they'll at least give me a complete/proper adaptor.

Where do you live,.. If it's somewhere near my travels,.. I can pop by and tell you what you need to do

I have a feeling you may have the wrong compression fitting

iirc: there are 2 types of 1-1/4" comression fittings

one designed for abs pipe and one designed for the chrome/brass down spout.

Thanks for the offer Jay. I think it's fixed now. I took the assembly down to the box store and for a change, the guy there was somewhat helpful. He said I had the correct fitting and that nothing was missing from it. He said it did seem a bit loose, but that it shouldn't have mattered. Water flows down so for the water to leak where I thought the water was coming from, it'd have to be backing up or clogged. He suspected that it was the flange on the drainpipe coming off the sink and showed me a trick using teflon tape to create a custom gasket. After I got everything reassembled I made double sure to teflon tape anything connected with threads. So far not a drip to be found.

    Thanks for everyone's help.
