    Unhappy Timing Belt broke!!

I was coming home from Lethbridge on Sat night and my car started to loose speed rapidly, but my rpms kept rising. So i knew there was a problem, I pulled over and my car would not start. After towing it to my mechanic he looked at it and said the timing belt broke. He's not sure when he can do it, nor how much $$ it will be because I most likely bent some valves and/or done some worse internal damage. Does anyone know what the best course of action is? Should I wait and let him try to fix everything, or does someone know a good mechanic at a resonable price? Or does anyone know what it would cost to get a JDM B20 engine and swap it in? I wonder if that would be more feasible. Does anyone know where I can find an old JDM B20 in good shape? Thanks

JDm b20s are dirt cheap. Look around, cuz I know I can get one for like 1200 with tranny/

Do you know how much instal would run approx for a B20? IT should just drop in I believe. I am going to call around to see. don't know if I should do that tho, or just fix my car. I am really broke right now, so the cheapest alternative seems like the best.

Well IF you can get a JDM B20 for 1200 then its prolly going to cost you at least that to Rebuild your engine. so thats probably the best course of action. plus less Km's and a little more power

why not fix you engine! you probably only have a bent valve or 2. easy fix. like 2-3 hours.

I just had a timing belt replaced on my Neon for 300$ total. It was a timing belt only nothing more though.

That is NOT your timing belt. If you timing belt snapped you might hear a collision of metal and you car would die quite close to instantly. No rising revs with dropping speed. Now, having said that, it could be your clutch. It may have been slipping. Not a big problem. Get it replaced. But then again, it may not be the clutch. But to reiterate, by what you said, it was not you timing belt.

Agreed, sounds like a blown clutch, especially if your revs kept going up with no speed. Also you probably couldn't start it without really having to be gentle on the clutch pedal. Did anything smell really bad right after your car went fubar?

meh, 95% of the time a snaped T-belt only bends 1 or 2 valves.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
My engine doesn't turn over. It makes a sort of humming noise. That's all. And my car did die almost instantly. As soon as I noticed the rpms start to rise it died. If it was just the clutch wouldn't the car still be able to start in neutral? I'm pretty sure it's the timing belt because the mechanic who checked it is a good friend of mine and a reputable mech, but i could be wrong (god i hope so). I haven't been able to check it personaly since he did because it's pretty far from my house and I have no transportation.

If that's the case that doesn't sound too bad, another one of my mechanic friends said he will help me fix it if I can find a garage to use. So far no luck tho. But he also told me it would take a lot of work to change the timing belt and another bunch of work to fix any bent valves. I'm not sure if I want to spend any cash to open up the engine to see what's wrong with it because it could be quite pricey, or if I just want to swap in a B20 (I got quoted $1400 + any parts I'll need from Yoko used JDM engines.)

I don't know what to do and I don't have much cash...so I'm pretty stuck right now.
Anyone have a cheap cheap car laying around?

Timing Belt really isn't alot of work, it's what happens with an interference engine when it goes that can cause headaches.

Well he said it takes alot of work to change it and I ws just letting him know how much it cost me to have it changed. $200 doesn't seem like alot of work to me is what I was saying.

No doubt man, I was agreeing with you... but you have to remember that was done as maintenance...Before it broke.... ie; no valvetrain work. Just remove a motor mount, a cover, loosen an tensioner pulley and reverse...

$200 sounds really really cheap. Is that a dealership? Or just a shop in town? I may be very interested.

Also, my engine is an interference engine, so I really have no idea how much damage is caused until I open it up.
