8 people reported as shot, possibly 2 dead. Not a good week for the USA.

Wow. How could this happen in a highly militarized society where everyone is either watching violent television, playing violent FPS games, or employed by a weapons manufacturer?Originally posted by yeahyeah

Once would expect this sort of thing to happen in Tibet, or Switzerland.
What is with the USA. Last night a guy at a millitary base opened fire, killing 12, an 8 month old baby was found alive locked in a chest under her babysitters bed. now this.

higher population, lower standard of living, higher poverty, undereducated. All that really stems from the first reason, high population. Put 300 million people in Canada and we’d have the same problemsOriginally posted by MIWYFSHOT

Looks like they caught the suspect
Apparently 1 dead and 6 wounded
yikes
I don't see how gun laws have anything to do with what happened yesterday or today. Anyone can get a gun in Canada. Do you consider Canada to have too lax gun laws as well?Originally posted by Redlyne_mr2

They don't, they have a culture problem.Originally posted by Redlyne_mr2

You'll recall we've had shootings in Canada as well.
Czech Republic has some of the most lenient gun carrying laws in the western world, yet they have a lower homicide rate than Canada.
Might be a good idea then to make guns difficult to obtain in a country with such a serious culture problem.Originally posted by Hakkola

Lets also not forget about Switzerland which has mandatory gun ownership. The personal weapon of militia personnel is kept at home as part of the military obligations. This, in addition to liberal gun laws and strong shooting traditions, has led to a very high gun count per capita. Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world, but also one of the lowest firearm related crime rates in the world.Originally posted by Hakkola

Maybe you could share your magical methods for the drug enforcement community as well.
everyone is dying to know how to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, while at the same timing not stripping the average citizen the freedom to defend themselves and their property.

I'm not going to get into some back and forth argument about gun laws and "rights to defend ones self". What I'm simply saying is there are a lot of crazies in the US who have easy access to weapons, it doesn't take a genius to realize there is a big problem south of the border.

This isn't just about rate gun ownership, or gun availability - It's also about the cultural context.
America is a highly militarized society, and has been since it's inception. It's a culture that embraces and elevates violence as both a pastime, and a solution to all problems.

Maybe you should ask the perpetrators why they did what they did first instead of trying to add some all encompassing societal psychological spin to the incidents.
