the axles were actually fine,the tranny went,but it was kinda dark out when i looked under the car. when we pushed the car on the flat bed the tranny kept on locking up so we had to take 2 steps forward and one step back to get on the flat bed

Sounds like he might have sheared through the input shaft. The PING came when he let the clutch in all the way.

He told me he was going to pull the motor this week to get a better look so we should have an update soon.

Could be. Those pinions do have a tendency to explode if you put too much power through them. Either way, that was a rather expensive metallic PING.
