Every night? Jesus. I can't remember the last time I turned mine off. Maybe three months ago?
Ahaha..
It becomes habit.
Asides from windows updates, my computer hasn't been off since I changed the motherboard 11 months ago.Originally posted by Tram Common

Its in my bedroom.
So when i go to bed, so does it
Its not only about money. Its about freedom, friends and family too.
Mine is also in the bedroom, but I leave it on while I sleep. I find the drone of the fans puts me right to sleep.
this computer stays on 24/7, but I usually restart it before I burn a bluray disc--those suckers are still too expensive to risk.
The other one (with my vinyl plotter, scanner and laser printer attached to it) just gets turned on when I need to use one of those peripherals.

Been looking into getting a good plotter and program.
But not only do i turn my comp off cause its in my bedroom, but i was grown up to believe that if left on it can easily get viruses or something... dont know the truth behind that, but its gotten me into the habit.
... what does it take... like 2 mins to turn on?
Not a big deal in my opinion.
It's true, hackers know when you're not looking at your screen and that's when they strike with the viruses.Originally posted by swak

my computer is on 24/7, same as my P3 server
i dont really understand why to leave it on for so long? why drain the unnecessary power
mines off every after every use, takes 2 min to boot up

True, I got a pretty draining power supply that uses up a lot of power, but the convenience of the computer just working is awesome. I only turn it off at night cause I have too many fans to cool my rig off , but really during the day its on... I boot it up in the morning go to school/work its still on... i come home , just like i left it. Sounds weird, but makes the day feel shorter for me haha
Standby is a wonderful thing.

I use MacBooks like desktops and I never shut mine off unless I'm prompted to restart. I just close them/sleep whenever not in use, current uptime is 2days1hour. I've had it hit around 30days once or twice

That is the magic of the Hachiroku.
I never turn mine off at all unless its the updates too.
I adjusted my power settings for my computer tho so it isnt "fully on" when im not around.
I herd that its the turning on and off that actually breaks electronics as a random side note.
2 minutes? Really? that's insane.Originally posted by swak

Use a Linux Bootloader/MBR, and a program called Bootvis.
11 seconds from pressing the power button to up and ready to go.
2 minutes?! Blasphemy!
I suppose that's kind of ironic consdering the only time my computer ever goes off is when I restart. Or swapping parts on the inside (clearly).

Just like with a car engine, most of the damage is done from a cold start... Especially noticeable with the life of a HDD. (at least in my experiences).
The only problems I've had with a computer while it's running are fluctuations in the power. Buy a proper sized UPS or "APC Line-R" and you're good to go.
if you're looking into getting a good one, you don't want to know which one I useOriginally posted by swak
