Default B.C. seeking to seize luxury vehicles from street-racing teens

    http://www.theprovince.com/news/seek...166/story.html

The B.C. government is seeking the forfeiture of five of 13 high-performance vehicles seized in an alleged street-racing incident last month - two Lamborghinis, an Aston Martin, a Mercedes SLS AMG and a Nissan GT-R.
    Interesting auction to go to.

IMO they should be taken away in the sense of public saftey (who says they wont do it again).

If I were the owners though, I would be PISSED if they took my 200K+ car without giving me a penny.

You'd probably be more pissed if you were the parent of someone who was killed if one of these vehicles lost control.

Personally I thought they should have at least temporarily confiscated and even forced the destruction of all of the rest of the WWII era fighter jets from that accident in the US.

Anytime people die in a racing accident (public, private or otherwise legal) automatically should mean forfeiture and siezure of vehicles involved.

Hell, if they can throw you in jail for transporting $100 worth of pennies across the border - This is definitely within bounds. Kids nowadays have no clue or understanding of scope of the boundaries setup. Driving is a priveledge, racing is only legal in certain areas at certain times, even then - negligence can mean jail for life.

    1.) Mainlanders.

2.) The 5 being seized & sold are repeat offenders.

I like the part where they say the dude registered the car under his mom so they can save on insurance LOL. I guess the rich don't get rich by throwing away money..

I find this story largely ironic; mostly because these 2nd gen fobs are probably trying to overcompensate for the years of being driven to soccer by their slow-assed parents.

Yes but let's focus on what did happen and no one knows what really went down except for the drivers and whoever else was on the road at the time.

I'm still confused with this case. They can't prove shit but are trying to retain and sell the vehicles.

Well I'm sure there must have been witnesses - but cases like this can be difficult to prove. Lawyers can ask if the witnesses were experts on estimating speed, etc.

I'm not saying that these vehicles should or should not be seized. That's a matter of personal opinion. But chances are, in a populated area like Vancouver, I can't imagine that going these kinds of speeds for any length of time could possibly be deemed safe by anybody who is sane. And with that said, these people likely *knew* they were endangering others. And if that is the case, then they probably knew there could be repercussions to their actions - like like someone who just goes 30k over the limit knows they are subject to a ticket if caught.

When I had the 944, I had it far past speeds indicated in this case. But then, I was on an open road with nothing around, and endangered nobody but myself. But still, if the cops caught me, I would have expected extreme measures to be taken. Pay to play.

    ^^^

    For sure!

But is it written in law the government can actually seize the vehicles and sell them? Or is it just something they decided to do now because of how high profile this case is.

I think Ontario is the only province with legislation for that right now, but you need to go through a lengthy conviction to get that done.

I don't see how the crown is even fathoming this is a possibility considering they were given RO tickets, and are going on by witness recollections.

The way I see it, some one is either looking for a promotion to the judges bench, or they are trying to find ways to scare other idiots from doing this again.

If it was me, and by some chance I agreed to partake on such and event and faced my self with the possibility of loosing my car, you bet your ass I would be fighting tooth and nail to put the government in its place.

I wonder if insurance will even insure a 17 yr old on an exotic. That's so mighty high risk.

Going back to the last auction:

    http://helablog.com/2010/11/300000-f...p-for-auction/

Sounds like they will get some $ back after province take 20-30% off the final auction price. Love to see them there bidding to get the cars back.
