    Default Tesla Electric Car "bricks".

    http://theunderstatement.com/post/18...stating-design

Everyone knows what it means to "brick" a computer or phone. Well it can happen to your brand new car too if you let the battery get too low.

"Due to Tesla batteries naturally decaying over time, Tesla offered Roadster customers a $12,000 “battery replacement program”. This program is intended to replace a Roadster battery with a new one seven years after purchase. When asked, the Tesla service manager said even if owners had paid in advance for this replacement battery program, they would not be allowed to use it to replace an accidentally discharged battery — they would have to pay the full $40,000-plus cost."

I told them they shoulda used a nice 350 pound nickel battery - but they wouldn't shell out the money. Instead they went with unproven Lithium-ion, and now they have a whole bunch of $109,000 bricks.
    Cocoa $10,000 per tonne.

I dont even know why people buy these cars... their ugly. for me to have to shell out 40k every 7 years is a joke too.... I did my 2011 taxes the other day, and I think my total fuel costs for the year, on both an X5 and my vette was 2800 combined... thats $19600 in 7 years, and I can use my cars in the snow, and I have a convertible for summer, which can go just as fast as the Tesla.

you buy a li ion car, with clear instructions and battery maintenance intervals clearly spelled out..... But you chose to ignore it?

then blame the company? Would you drain the oil out of your car and drive around and expect warranty?

    duh.

Its been suggested that noone gets an Electric car in Canada.

Its too cold. By the time you have put in a 1500 watt electric heater, to keep yourself at 18 Celsius while driving through -30 degree air at 70 km/h... Any battery will not only run out of juice far faster than any mileage that you could get out of it.

And you would also be out of limits for the storage capacity of any li-ion battery (usually -15 celsius or risk permanent battery damage)

Electric car is fine for temperate or even slightly hot climates, but totally sucks everywhere else.

yup. Same reason we are unlikely to see e85 in any quantity.

I look foreward to drag racing and hot rodding electric cars.

Me thinks I want direct injection propane for my next project. Propane needs some love again. Brings back memories from when I was a kid.

A 1500w heater won't even keep the interior warm when a vehicle isn't moving when its much below -15/-20... I know, I've slept in my truck in a parking lot before. Hardly keeps it above 0, let alone +18.

Battery is retarded in cars until you can find one that works the same between -30 and 40c.

Their, there, they're... wtf were you doing in grade six when this was discussed? Not to be an idiot but really you need to brush up on your grammar, we all do.

You got "too" correct but jammed on "their"... very odd.

Not following your line of thought here. Oh I see it now, eh I'm over it all now, fuck grammar and all the baggage it can carry.

I haven't checked the spotted thread, but I have seen one of these in town just this week. I know they did substantial winter testing in Finland, like most car companies do and IIRC the car had no trouble maintaining passenger temperature. Running the electric heater has got to affect your range though.

Personally, I think they're pretty cool and their model x might be a good car for commuting. Might even take a look at the model S once it's actually available.

Tesla's solution is that there is a heater for the battery and it has an air-conditioning system, so appropriate temperature is maintained at all times for the battery. But again, that's going to cause a hit on your range from a charge.

They had the Fisker Karma on Top Gear Sunday. Looks cool. Battery powers the wheels, solar panel roof runs the speedo, AC, radio etc, 2.0L Gas Engine re-charges the battery if low.

+1, for a ~$100k 'sports hybrid electric thingy' i'd rather get a fisker.
