I lol'd hard at the taxi industry calling a company bullies that should go to hell! Pot meet kettle and now see how society views the taxi mafia in this city.

I believe they must pay uber 25% of each fare. Download the app and you can find out an estimate on your ride.

took a taxi tonight from saddledome 16.50 +tip

time was all comparable 11-13 minutes. car2go seems best value and so far uber has been about 30% less than taxis and 100% better service. Taxi tonight was able to inform me about the capital of qatar though.
hard to compare car2go and uber...
    can't fit 4 people in car2go, can't take car2go after a few drinks...

fwiw i was picked up in a Porsche cayenne the other day... sitting in that vs driving a car2go alone is worth the price difference

Isn't car2go bringing in Mercedes B-Class vehicles soon?

Also awesome that you got a ride in a Cayenne but really, owning a Porsche and doing Uber? Classic calgary money management.

I was mostly just comparing the 3 modes of transportation if you don't own a car. I completely agree though, much rather a ride in a nicer vehicle, or the option after boozing.

Was chatting with a guy yesterday, he said for each of the last 2 weeks he has drove about 10 hrs. Gross so far he has made 1000 bucks. So if you pick your timing right it can be a decent side income.

Okay, question re not having coverage on your vehicle when driving for uber...is it not as simple as this:
You're in an accident with an uber client in your car when, *CRASH*....officer: "so what happened here?"
"Well, my buddy 'Bob' and I were on our way to so-and -so, when I didn't see this other car coming out of the parking lot"
Officer: "I see...you have your insurance and registration?"
    "I do, sir"
"Thank you...off you go. Go contact your ins company".

In a non injury accident you don't even need the police to be attending. Just go to your insurance company and report the accident...that happened as you were out for a Sunday drive.

It could work just as you describe, but if your insurance company finds out somehow, you claim would be denied and they would probably sue you for insurance fraud.

That's a conviction that would really follow you around. Worse than a DUI imo.

Insurance considerations aside, the city wasting money on undercover stings is a joke and pretty clearly being done to protect the taxi commission and attack Uber since the city can't get their hands into Uber's pocket.

Pretty tough even logistically for an Insurance company to find this wouldn't it? Hundreds of claims every single day, with passengers in cars. Does an insurance company have the resources to start investigating every single crash that has a passenger in it? They're going to ask Uber to turn over their entire driver list and event log every time? Hire an investigator to track down, the unnamed passenger? How?

Any different than getting into an accident on your way to work, while only having "pleasure" coverage?
Or a vehicle carrying a box of tile for a client, yet only having personal use collision? So many technicalities in coverage that I'm sure get side-stepped all the time.

Only if it was a serious accident causing life-long injuries or death, can I see it happening.

What a waste of time. I was reading the comments and someone repeatedly was mentioned that in places where Uber was fully up and running that MADD reported on reduced drunk driving.

Seems like Alberta would be a great place for that to occur.

So what if you were giving your friend a ride somewhere and he wanted to compensate you for the ride. Just make the app so that it's a friend finding service, and you just so happen to help calculate fair compensation for friends in the app.

Just because you're searching for a friend to give you a ride from one point to another doesn't mean he can't be your friend.

Technically anyone that takes cash for a ride would be breaking their insurance rules. I can't recall the specifics of the article i read but there would be many industries and delivery people that wouldn't have the right type of insurance. Getting cash for giving a friend a ride would technically void your insurance.

Dave sort of touched upon it on his post about people transporting items for work...

But the city only cares about uber insurance not the rest of the other industries that get caught up in the same issue.

Uber has dealt with so many of these dumb, narrow-minded, taxi-revenue protectionist city councils that they could probably write a book on it.

In the end, they will prevail because enough people demand this service. All this is just optics on behalf of the city to make it appear like they are trying to appease the status quo.
