Default Moving out of town, Strathmore or Airdrie?

Hey guys, Just making the next move selling our current condo and wanting moving on up into a single family detached front garage home. 1,500-1,800 sqft. Our price range is somewhat say maximum 400k we would like to spend. Cant seem to find exactly what we are looking for, ie: main floor or upstairs laundry, bonus room, yard, sometimes a developed basement. We do however find exactly what we are looking for just outside of Calgary. Im just mainly looking for inputs as how it is living out in Airdrie or Strathmore, neighborhoods, property taxes, activities, proximity to schools. since our youngest is turning 4 we will need to be somewhat close to an elementary and with another on the way, stay at home mom it must be in the budget. thanks guys!

Depends: would you rather drive into NE Calgary or NW Calgary? lol

we're currently in chestermere. but moving into a single detached is 430k and over for something nice. 350-400 range would be nice to stay in. who knows, maybe something will come up and we'll get lucky in chestermere. but for a fairly newer house or brand new, to move to airdrie or strathmore pretty good.

cochrane, always seemed a bit too far for us. strathmore is still close to our family in chestermere and airdrie doesnt seem too too bad as we're usually @ cross iron on the weekends to shop and a few friends live in skyview ranch.

Strathmore - morning commute into Calgary has the sun at your back, afternoon commute has the sun at your back. More small town feel still, probably way less rush hour traffic.

Airdrie - feels a lot like Calgary, can have brutal rush hour traffic on the #2.

Cochrane - morning commute has the sun in your face, afternoon commute has the sun in your face as well. Some small town feel.

Langdon - not much for retail/services out there, should change in time. Only 2 lane access and will be that way for a long time.

    Chestermere - lake access?

Personally would choose Strathmore of the five.

    What about Crossfield?

You should look into Wild Flower Ranch in Strathmore.

Strathmore smells terrible, especially in the summer. It is much easier to drive in on Highway 1 than 2 from Airdire, but I still prefer Airdrie.

Good point. The radio always seems to be talking about QE2 in the mornings. It seems like there is an accident or delay on southbound QE2 at least once a week.

i live in strathmore. i lived in calgary almost all of my life until i moved out here. i looked at airdrie before i moved to strathmore and obviously ended up picking strathmore.

strathmore has a small town vibe, has good housing prices, the taxes are pretty high and ya, it does smell like shit sometimes, but the commute is awesome, all in all, i wouldnt change living here.

airdrie has a higher crime rate from what ive heard, the housing prices are comparable, but the traffic is terrible and you have to drive deerfoot everyday.

if you have any questions, let me know. i used to live in hillview, it is a decent area.

Airdrie stinks 24/7 if your close enough to the chip plant...

All depends on what you're looking for... I went to beiseker - mostly for $ / value reasons. Commute stayed the same (hwy 9 is 99% awesomesauce - to access any of the east side of calgary; only had 1 really bad commute thusfar this year IMHO).

Airdrie is no different than calgary, crossfield/carstairs - were same $ as airdrie; which was pretty much same $ as calgary.

No clue on the south end - lot of the commute times depends on where you're coming/going to. For me it made little sense... though my time to hit any eastern community was pretty much consistant

Was in the same boat as you a few years back, I really wanted Airdrie but the traffic was just bonkers, was a huge turn off. Chestermere has the feeling of NE phase 2 in the newer communities, plus the taxes there are nuts, though I'd love a place on the lake or in the older parts of town.

Been In Strathmore 5 years now, really like the town and the commute is not a huge deal, never ever any traffic jams. We looked long and hard in Langdon, but as was mentioned before the lack of amenities made it a no go. Im up in the north west corner of town and the smell of money is also very infrequent. Been a great place for the kids too with the football teams/swimming pool/minor hockey and a air cadet chapter.

Planing a move this summer to Acreage life, my house here would fit your needs nicely.
