All of this nonsense makes me so happy that I went to school in a small town... Good grief.

I'm pretty sure times have changed, and that you'll probably go to jail and they'll take the kids away if you did that today.
We had a relative threatening to call child services on us if we let our kids wait at the bus stop on their own. They felt that we were being irresponsible and putting our children at risk.
To the contrary, we are very mindful in how we raise our children, and look for opportunities for them to gain confidence and independence in a supported manner.
Said relative was finally de-escalated, but it took up a lot of time and energy... and some bad feelings linger.
The message was sent very clearly who the parents are, and who the parents are not.... But some folks just feel responsible for everything they see.

Not necessarily so, we're only 3 miles out from downtown and have CBE schools at all 3 levels within walking distance (under 1 mile) and there's no lottery at all in any of those schools.Originally posted by rage2
And before anyone brings in the "inner city schools are empty", those are the ones with the longest wait list and lowest lottery chances.

Soon this won't be an issue for us as the youngest has started grade 12. I'm sure there'll be other worries in the future but K-12 schooling is one big headache we'll be glad to be rid of.
Will fuck off, again.
Savings are likely coming from an hour or so of extra bus driver labor, as well as less gas from not driving around the neighborhood stopping and going.
I see where the savings are coming from
We should have a poll on how people's kids get to school and whether they are "inner city" or suburban.

Do they have some sort of lease payment per stop with the city? I dont get how it can save anything, let alone 30%. Same kids, same destination. I doubt its that much less driving.

I thought lottery only happens when you are outside the zone?Originally posted by rage2

No?
I remember a colleague told me he moved from Mckenzie Towne to Douglasdale to get his kid into a school.

holy shit. if someone in my friends/family circle ever said anything like that to me, they would never be allowed near me or my kids again.Originally posted by Robin Goodfellow

Pretty sure my friends in Elgin were complaining that their daughter couldn't get into McKenzie Towne school due to losing the lottery.Originally posted by Xtrema

EDIT: I misunderstood the difference between "walking zone" and "designated school". Kids are not guaranteed entrance to their designated school. Kids within the walking zone are given first priority.

Some schools also don't take students from outside their designated area.

I don't think there are any (maybe a couple?) that are considered inner-city. I thought I remembered hearing a year ago that St Marys was considering closing due to decreased enrollment. Don't know how true that was, though.Originally posted by suntan

Correct. Kids needs to be bussed to these schools because there's no room in their designated schools. Some inner city schools don't even have lotteries, just wait lists, because they're full, so inner city kids in that area gets bussed to the suburbs.Originally posted by Xtrema

I think there are 3 levels of lottery.
Best chance) walking distance or walking zone with siblings
Second best) not in walking distance but siblings in school
Worst) in bus zone and no siblings.
The worst level is the one I would be in for the public school for my designated zone.
I think also to get into the lottery you have to wait outside the school with your sleeping bag or some shit like that on the day that it starts, i could be wrong.
Walking zone is less than 1km from school I think.
Not on the topic but how many of you also have problems getting their kids into fucking swimming lessons....god so frustrating.
