Default Dell buys EMC $67 Billion.

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/12/technology/dell-emc/

Probably its core assets are in its Virtualization tech and data mining. Not much in the way of nickels, or anything physical at all.

Still, lots of dollars for a company that no one has ever heard of.
    Cocoa $7,000 per tonne.

Maybe if you are not in IT, EMC is a company that you've never heard of. But if there's an IT guy out there that doesn't know who EMC is, than they deserve to be let go.

This.....you would be a pure idiot who doesn't belong in IT at all if you haven't heard of EMC...perhaps you heard of VMWare...or RSA....all EMC..

EMC is one of the largest storage providers. They contribute to the V-Block which holds a good portion of the converged infrastructure market share.

Like npham says if you work in IT and haven't heard of them you probably shouldn't work in IT.

I never liked virtualization. It seems silly with electricity at less than 2 cents per kwh (any area with coal for electricity) and Moores law, and increased production at chip Fabs.

Really, transistors are made of silicate sand, the most common element on earth. Why would you ever virtualize if you can just use more transistors?

I mean really, just use more boxes and suck up some more electricity. Its not like its California or Hawaii, where electricity is 10 to 40 cents per kwh. It might be a good idea for a Datacenter in California, but arguably - California is the worst place on earth to put a burning hot datacenter that ends up using tons of falling drinking water to run.

In the long run like Facebook, virtualization is doomed.

Haha. Personally I think they paid $65 billion too much, but hey - its not my money.

Its almost as *good* a deal as Canada buying US made F-35s.

Sorry ZenOps, I tried to ignore you and your insanity and don't think I have ever put you down, but your post about virtualization being a fad.....yah I now know you are batshit crazy. Only saving grace is that you made reference to Failbook in your post....that much I can agree on.

"Just a majority stake"? You mean like how ownership of public companies tends to work?

How do you guys figure that FB, a 250+ billion dollar company, is doomed in the long run? Revenues continue to go up and they have stakes in many other businesses (instagram, whatsapp, oculus rift, etc) so that they have many other options if facebook.com somehow goes the way of the dodo

Speaking of Facebook, I was pretty wrong about them. They did an amazing job in a very short amount of time monetizing mobile without pissing off users.

Good read on when they first went IPO. 3 years ago though, I would've agreed with ZenOps haha.

    x 2.

I'm in IT and let me tell you, EMC is being installed left right and centre in server rooms

Wow, Zenops. Had to do a head shake.

EMC has suffered for years. All storage companys have as startups offers more for less and increasing they are what cloud provider uses. Increasing hard for them to find margins.

Cloud computing is killing all software, hardware, and storage providers. VMware has pressure from Hyper-V.

This deal is structured in a way that's not that good for investors. Dell is doing a bargain purchase. I don't know if there is any growth potential or even any synergy to be had.

But the consumer computing is dying. Dell doesn't matter for a decade now. Their server offering is always behind HP and Cisco and even IBM is leaving the market. I remember Dell had their own enterprise storage offerings but I don't think that went anywhere for penetration.

I still don't get this deal.

you are an idiot, and clearly don't understand the fundamentals of virtualization, nor do you understand the benefits. Power is one minor consideration. none of us can understand everything.. the difference is that I keep my mouth shut on topics I know nothing about, or ask questions... not insert my stupid uneducated opinion.
