I watched the highlights I could not get how Merc finished 1 & 2. Its hilarious.
Oh to be a fly on the way in that team meeting afterwards.
Does Vettle have a future at Ferrari...?
Merc has been slower than Ferrari for the last handful of races. They knew this and understood they didn't stand a chance with an undercut, so the strategy was to run long which would result in the same order (but way behind on track) hoping for a safety car. Singapore, they lost track position and lost a place to Verstappen from this strategy because Hamilton's tires were beyond done, so there's still risk involved. In Russia, Mercedes strategically went with the Mediums to start to prevent Singapore repeat. It finally paid off and they capitalized. It's just hilarious that it was because Vettel's car broke down that triggered the working strategy. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
What could Ferrari have done to prevent this? They would've had to qualify on the same strategy as Mercedes to eliminate this risk. Should've put at least one driver on it, although choosing which driver would've been drama within Ferrari. If they wanted 1-2, probably not the greatest idea to have 1 driver on mediums. With that said, if Vettel stayed out to protect from SC/VSC (assuming his car didn't break), the risk would have been Hamilton passing him on track and prevented Vettel undercutting. They should have Vettel wait until Hamilton was closer before pitting him. Ham was only catching up at 1/2 second a lap when Vettel went in. He pitted and ended up behind Leclerc, so there was no reason to not wait longer at that stage of the race. Minimize the potential SC/VSC strategy window by a few more laps, then undercut Hamilton.
So much fun playing what if in terms of strategies in hindsight. Race in itself was fairly boring, but the way the strategy played out as well as the radio banter made it pretty tense for those that knew why Mercedes did what they did.

I dunno man, it was early Sunday and just her facial expression and the shots of her before. I was in love. I stand by my assessment. I can't explain the magic I felt sitting in my boxers half on half off my couch with the lights off, wife completely dead to the world in bed unaware of the happenings of F1.
It's a weird time of day.
I mean I'm not exactly the spring chicken I once was. I for damn sure am not on international TV.
