Finally got a garage heater but its on one of those basic non programmable thermostats. For the guys that have one, do you set it up to heat at certain times or just keep it at the same temp all the time?

Mine also just has a dummy thermostat and I keep my garage at 3-5C. Enough to melt the snow and prevent things from freezing but no reason to heat it more than that. If I need to do work in there then I'll manually turn it up ahead of time.
Mine has a thermostat which I set at 18C. Inside of the house is typically around 22C. Just don't want too much of a system shock when I enter the garage in the mornings from the house. lol.
I heat mine up when I need it. 240v can tire heater can get my garage to 15 degrees even when it's -25 out.

I have a basic programmable unit, I leave it at 7 degrees when it's real cold out and 10 when it's normal-cold. I turn it up to 15 when I'm working in there.
I leave my cheapo 120V at basically 0 overnight ( I plug it in when I get home and unplug when I leave )
Actually does a really solid job.

Same. Unless my truck is covered in snow when I get home, then I'll crank it to 20° for the evening with the windows or doors open so the whole truck thaws out. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Fuck...reading this thread is making me think I have been overdoing it all these years. No wonder those bills are as high as they are, though I haven't payed close attention for some time.
Part of the reason is I sometimes chill in the garage in the same clothes I wear inside (shorts/t-shirts/under-shirts), plus when we are taking the baby out through the garage I figured sudden change in temperature isn't good for him, but maybe I will tone it down a bit. No wonder the fucking thing is always running and I get a little ice monument made outside on the side of the house where the heater vent drips water. lol
No, I'm with you. Mine is set to 17C 24/7. I've got a gas powered radiant heater. I don't want to get into a chilly car and my wife doesn't either

They really aren't. I think it adds maybe 20-40$ in the coldest months. I was surprised. I think it's only 35000 btu. Our utilities range from ~350-600 or so for everything

Shak's budget would be fascinating to dissect for some many reasons.
Also, babies can be cold, it's parents who are soft.

Curious those of you that keep your garage close to inside temperatures, do you have insulated garage doors?
Yes why wouldn't you? Mine is an oversize 3 car, there's no way it could be kept warm without good insulation

Yea I've got that good higher rated insulation in the walls and the garage doors are also higher insulated rating and it's a gas connected ceiling mounted heater much like g-m is mentioning. Yea to be honest I've never really paid close attention to the utility bills as they are all just auto-withdrawals, but I didn't think it would make THAT much of a difference that I'd feel the need to go into a cold ass garage every morning.
