anyways, pull off one of your front wheels, and look at the pads.. If you have rims, sometimes you can see the pads without taking off the wheel. The pad is the ONLY part/surface touching the disc/rotor
as for noise, there is a piece of metal that drags along the rotor when the pads are low. When the pad just begins to wear, the noise sometimes goes away. If you wait a week, that noise will not go away.. BTW: the noise should be a screetching metal to metal sound.
Illeagle is right about the warning noise that pads are low.
A quick & dirty rule of thumb is that is there is less than the thickness of a dime remaining on the pads, as you look down at them in the caliper, you should replace tham pronto.
i know that if you go to advance auto parts, and get new pads, they give you a lifetime waranty, so next time there worn, you get new ones for free

mininmum brake disc thickness will usually be printed on the side of the disc
the linings must never be allowed to wear thinner than approximatley 1/16"
