Default Lunar Eclipse: Wed 27, ~7pm-11pm (w/ animated screenshot)

Just a heads up for those interested, there will be a lunar eclipse this Wednesday starting around 7:00pm and ending a bit after 11:00pm, with totality a bit after 9:00pm.

If you miss this one, the next total eclipse won't happen until March 3, 2007! Hopefully it'll be clear out

Here's a quick animated screenshot I just slapped together:

Aurorae are dependent on coronal mass ejections and sunspots on the sun, which are pretty random. My suggestion would be to keep your eye on www.spaceweather.com, which announce this sorta stuff. From looking at the page now, it looks like there could even be some tonight or within the next upcoming day or two.

Didn't you mention a few months ago that there was a sweet meteor shower coming up? Was it in late Oct or not till Nov?

November 17th, the Leonids meteor shower, is gonna be the huge one. The last one back in August (the Perseids meteor shower) peaked at about 70 meteors an hour. This upcoming one will peak at ~1000 meteors an hour! We actually just missed a minor one a few days ago, but it wasn't really that big of a deal IMO.

D'z, do you think this will be a total eclipse?

and, I don't think this would be like the meteor showers where you would have to basically sit in the dark to see it would you? (would the city lights have any affect on this eclipse?)

Yup, this will be a total eclipse. I think there's gonna be a partial eclipse sometime early next year as well, but not another total eclipse for the next three years.

And no, the city lights will won't have much affect on the viewing. The moon's gonna be big and red!

I remember seeing the eclipse last year at around the same time... the moon was red! Very cool...

What causes the moon to turn red? Light pollution from earth?

During totality, when the moon is completely immersed in shadow, it might turn red, the result of Earth's atmosphere bending hints of all the world's sunrises and sunsets simultaneously onto the moon while the sun's primary light is blocked.

Turned out to be a bust for me tonight. I took 194 pictures and they all came in out of focus

Tonight was the first night I used my new telescope with the rebel in prime focus, and needless to say, I had a lot of focusing problems.

We'll have a couple partial eclipses next year, April 24 at 3:55am and November 17 at 6:03am, but the eclipse would be so tiny you probably wouldn't even notice it if you even wanted to stay up that late! Hahaha!!

March 3, 2007 will have a total eclipse, but we won't be able to see it from Calgary.

Next one we will see is on August 28, 2007, but it's at 4:37am!

After that, the only other total eclipse that we will see here within a reasonable time is on Feb 20, 2008 at 9:26pm.
