You can seriously ruin things if you try and do this without knowing how to do it.

From what I've heard it is a MAJOR project. Unless you are an actualy mechanic (not in your own mind, but through school), I'd take it in somewhere to do.Originally posted by alpha

Apparently I'm going to have to take my Jetta in fairly soon... that's going to cost some serious dough.

Timing belts are expensive, so I see where you are coming from. However, I'd pony up the cash and get a shop to do it. That way, if something screws up as a result, you have someon to fall back on.
Timing belts are cheap. It's the labour that's expensive.
They're not that hard to do. Just takes time and the right tools/patience.
Good ol' Honda tech, this is for a d16z6 but its pretty much the same for your civic. The only differences is the dipstick shaft part (gets in the way of one of the bolts you have to remove for the timing belt cover) and a few other misc. things.

Thats the link I was going to post too^...Basically the same, but then again al cars are.. I've done a car before, a neon with my cousin... yuck..those things are shitty to work on...either way if your handy with the tools it's a job totally worth doing yourself... Expect arond 6-8hours of work, thats garage working, beer drinking hours at a steady pace...
