Not O&G but pretty much unemployed as of this week, weakening USD and no vehicle market correction means nothing is buyable for us to export.
I was laid off and haven't found SIMILAR work yet
I was laid off and found a new job in the same industry
I was laid off and found a new job/career in a different industry
I'm still plugging along with the same company I've always been with
I quit my job and went elsewhere
We're all fucked

Not oil and gas but petrochemical. We a small round of layoffs at our canadian plant with more coming globally. Price/demand of Methanol in the tank for the foreseeable future.
Sorry to hear, but this is way better for Consumers. More supply = lowered prices. Every vehicle that gets exported helps to reduce supply and increase the prices of vehicles in Alberta. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Sorry to hear, but any secondary plans if USDCAD stays weak for the foreseeable future? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I think it is a good time to pivot if you can.
I’ve only ever worked in the auto industry so I guess search around in the industry. Money hasn’t been great but I might look at taking part time school on top of full time work in the next few years too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The FX guys I deal with (we buy a fair amount of USD) claim they don't expect the strong CAD to last for long. Hopefully they are right for your sake. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
So hoard USD at this level? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I have purchased over $1M in the last bit (for work, I don't have that lying around...). Will be interesting to see if it was really worth it. But even at this level every 1 cent change is only $10K which doesn't really make that much of a difference. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Tuesday and Thursday for Husky folks, good luck to all!
Conoco also moving 100 field staff to Calgary and laying 25 off over the next 2 weeks.
Is there a reason its always a Tuesday or Thursday - I thought because they didn't want to fire people on a Friday was something to do with suicide but I'm sure its more to do with the fact people are more likely to be in the office on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. One of my wife's friends is trying to avoid the layoffs by just taking vacation this week. I'm also unsure what they do if they want to layoff a person while on vacation.
Foolproof plan. Never come back, never get laid off. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Rookie mistake. Never take vacation if you are getting laid off.

Im sorry but if she thinks that she can avoid a layoff by taking vacation, then she is definitely on the list.
Vacation always at the approval of a supervisor so they would not approve the vacation or do it over the phone. If she was already on vacation they would just revoke IT privileges and cancel access. She would have the unpleasant day when she returned and a letter waiting with HR.

The correct way to do this is get knocked up. But the timing is way harder to nail. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
That may save you from round 1 because it's a hurdle/PR nightmare. But it won't save you indefinitely.
My cousin-in-law (not these companies but a O&G service company regardless) is coming off mat leave in a month. The lack of communication about her return to work seem ominous.

I hear Tuesday is the main day, Thursday because they can't handle them all in 1 day.
But not Wednesdays...This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I believe I read something about a year ago that they changed a regulation and that you could lay off during maternity leave now. Maternity leave saved the wife during the first big round of the current long downturn.
Seems straight forward.Termination of employment
No employer may terminate the employment of, or lay off an employee solely because the employee is entitled to or has started maternity or parental leave. Termination of employment may occur if:
the employer suspends or discontinues the business; in this case, the employer must reinstate the employee if the business starts up again within 52 weeks after their leave ends, or
the reason for the termination is unrelated to the employee requesting or taking the leave

The bigger question is why is your wife's friend so fucking dumb? Lol.
Or maybe you are telling us a story that isn't 100% true and she planned vacation not strictly because of layoffs.
