Default *rant*Is anyone else getting fed up with this?

I sure hope I am not the only one....But i am getting tired of people bitching and whining to the government to legislate EVERYTHING!

NEWS FLASH PEOPLE! FINES ARE NOT THE BE AND END ALL FOR SOCIETIES PROBLEMS!

parent leaves thier kid in the car while running an errand, the populace cries for this to be illegal.

child hurts themselves tobagganing, populace cries out to make it illegal to sled without a helmet.

non smokers complain about smoke in bars, so they make it illegal..

these are just a few of the thousands of cases going on, and that is just locally, well western canada....

really, do we want every move we make legislated? and fines for everything? does this really make things better that we loose any and potentially ALL of our personal freedoms? This is making me sick.

personally, can't we just let darwinism / survival of the fittest take it's course and stop trying to legislate common sence into the people that will never accept responsibility for thier own acctions and try to blame the government because there is no law on the books?

these are truly tragic events, and I feel sad, but really, most of these cases are one-off-flukes.

I for one would prefer to be able to do as I see fit, and keep my freedom, than to keep asking for the government to step in and control my life, or else pay a damn FINE!

does the fine make someone smarter? no...
does the fine change the past? no....
can a fine prevent an accident? sometimes, but then we have to have an officer every 100 feet.

people really need to wake the fuck up, and use common sence, problem is, it ain't so common!

people seem to forget we made it this far.

i always thought it be funny to wear some sort of hockey/bike helmet while driving. just to see peoples reaction. The way things are headed that will soon be the new reality.

simple solution is that everyone should wear helmets all the time. No mare saying when and where, just everywhere all the time.

    Problem solved.

Short and sweet... we've spent so much time in making the world safe and sterile that it isn't interesting anymore.

although i do agree that common sense SHOULD be used by most, what you are forgetting about smoking in bars/leaving a child in a car/helmets for kids (haven't heard about sledding, but biking for sure) is that its not always meant to help the person getting ticketed.

    lets take for example, seatbelts.

2 people in a car, car gets pulled over and the driver who is not wearing a seatbelt, gets a ticket. the libertarian view point is "thats bs, a person should have the right to decide if they want to die or not." BUT if that car gets in an accident that person without the seatbelt can go flying around the inside of the car aaaand injure the passenger who was just along for a ride, which means the choice of the driver then affects someone else.

as per kids, and helmets, or ticketing the parents who leave their children in a car, children are not really considered able to make their own decisions by the government, which does make sense to an extent because most kids don't look past what they are doing at that exact second (however some could argue that some adults are that dumb as well....different argument).

to further add to this, one could also argue that they are watching out for health care spending in the long run, prevent long term damage/injuries from situations of those who lack common sense, and they won't have to worry about stressing the health care system any more. people can argue this is part of the reason that the government tries to ban smoking, but i'd honestly say thats more just public opinion, as smokers generate a pretty big chunk of change for the government.

basically the government doesn't see people on an individual basis, they see society as a group, and as such they have to try and take care of situations by comming up with solutions that will work for a group.

if you don't like it OR think you can do a better job then the government, you can.....

    A. elect someone with your view point
    B. try to get into the government yourself
    C. keep on doing what will get you fined, and pay the fines
    D. live within the parameters of the laws and bylaws set out by the government

The Hat's whole problem is an alderman by the name of Kathy Smith.

There wasn't just the case of Maxim, FHM, etc. She also wanted La Senza to take down the big posters in their store windows of the models in lingerie. We also don't have a strip club, and the nearest one in redcliff nearly got shut down because of religious cry babies.

Therefore, I conclude that because of this bullshit we all drink like fish to have the little fun we're allowed to have.

Kathy Smith is bullshit, I think it's time that we organize something to bust her ass and get her out of town. Let's drop some rufies in her water and dress her in lingerie and leave her on the steps of city hall!! Her secret life will be exposed...

Common sense in this world is at an all time low.....

I like the fact that because of one accident on a toboggan can spur talks about making helmets mandatory while toboganning, thats absolute BS IMO.

I understand what you are saying, but at the same time, everybody bitches about paying too much in taxes etc, and all these things add dramatically to the cost of society.

Smoking probably has the highest level of financial impact on medical care costs over anything, and that affects my pocket as a non-smoker. Even in societies where there is no public health system the effect is MASSIVE as this pushes up the cost of private insurance etc as well.

Helmets and seatbelts also reduce the dramatic costs of tramatic injuries, which also drive up not only health care costs, but also insurance costs etc, which also come out of yours and my pockets.

Let alone the fact that when you are responsible for the lives of others and you disregard any resemblance of responsibility towards those people, they are the ones that suffer the consequences, just so you can enjoy a smoke or whatever... Who gets to stick up for the kids?

The issues can go on and on for sure...

People always argue for the points that affect their own little part of life without consideration to society as a whole, and there are a lot more imporatant moral issues over and beyond whether or not you have a right to be a stupid ass and not wear a helmet on your motorcycle or whatever. I personally am more concerned with protecting the rights of those that care about others than those that care only for themselves...

Good to see others sharing my point of view being more vocal. I was being flamed left and right in the smoking threads for trying to convey the same message lol.

The problem with government turning common sense into laws is that we end up losing the ability to learn common sense on our own. I've talked about this in the playground zone threads. Putting 30km/h limits on playground zones effectively turns common sense (slow down when kids around) into a law. The downside? Kids feel safe on the roads, thinking THEY have the right of way. These kids grow up to go vacationing in China, India, Russia and get mowed down crossing the street there, since THEY have the right of way over cars has become second nature for them. I guess they can make a law saying illegal for kids to run onto the roads to force them to learn? Or even better, no playground zones, both sides learn common sense on their own. We're humans, we have brains, we learn basic survival skills, and that should be OUR responsibility.

The government isn't here to be our nannys. That's our jobs, parents jobs. And if they don't have enough common sense to know that, then their child deserved to die. Tough lesson to learn, but I'll bet that mom would be the most cautious mom now with the kid she has left. Individual responsibility should be left for... *gasp*... individuals. Shouldn't be forced/controlled by the government.

Funny that you mentioned this. As a prank, I drove around wearing my racing helmet top down in my SLK a few years ago. I got pulled over and was threatened with a ticket for stunting. Apparantly, everyone was staring at me . I said I wanted to be safe because it felt dangerous top down in case I rolled. The cop said don't be a jackass and let me go after I took the helmet off.

I actually wear my helmet when I do late night blasts down 1A in the summer. Common sense.

The thing is is that that kid died for her choice, and she should be responsible for it beyond the point of being sad and heart broken. It may have not been intentional, but IMO it is criminal.

If a semi truck driver lets his maintainence slip and he loses his brakes and kills someone, is he not criminally responsible? What is the difference here... No intention of killing someone was there, but their individual neglagence caused it, and damn right they should be resposible, and if enough people are dying or getting hurt because people are frigging dumb asses, then damn right a law should be there to take aim at them, just as we do with what are considered more severe crimes...
