    I think it's a Melon filled with gasoline. Not sure though. Can't imagine what else could be in there that would spread fire like that.

    The gasoline will only burn as fast as it can limited by the amount of air it is exposed to. Inside the melon, there's a relatively small surface area exposed to the air, so it doesn't burn off immediately.

    When the dumb fuck smashes it, the gasoline is instantly exposed to a lot of air, so it burns off quickly.
