I'll just add my two cents here.

Circa 1980's Japanese standard bikes can be found a dime a dozen, with low kms, for really cheap. Insurance is nothing and you don't feel bad if you drop a $1,000 bike with no fairings. I know they don't look as pretty, but they serve the purpose and are actually quite fun to boot around on. I can honestly say that I got a few looks whenever I would pull up on my 22 year old classic motorcycle!

Now if you want to stay in the beginner bike category and get a newer bike, I feel that there are basically only a few choices. You have the Kawasaki Ninja EX500. 2001 models are going for $4,500-$5,000. There's the 250cc model as well, but I'm pretty sure most beginners will be able to handle the 500, and would want the extra bit of power for everyday riding.

Then there's another bike that I didn't realize was considered a beginner bike until I checked into the insurance on it. The Suzuki SV650S. It came out in 99 and was redesigned for 2003 with fuel injection. I picked up a nice 2000 model for $5,000. After researching, I found that this is an excellent all around bike. It's still light enough for a new rider to manage, handles well, and the 90 degree V-twin motor provides lots of power. That V-twin also keeps this bike in a lower category for insurance. I wouldn't have considered it if insurance wasn't going to be decent.

So, hope that helps your decision making.

    I'm very interested in finding a '95 or '94 CBR 600.
