Honda is set to provide its CR-Z with an all-new, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine option as part of plans to broaden the compact coupé’s appeal in key world markets, including the UK.

Currently available with just the one engine option — a hybrid that mates a 112bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 14bhp electric motor — the CR-Z is earmarked to receive an all-new turbocharged 1.6-litre powerplant that is currently undergoing development at Honda’s Tochigi R&D centre.

The new engine, which is also planned for the Jazz, Civic and Accord, forms an integral part of a downsizing program instigated at Honda. With forced induction and Honda’s patented VTEC-i fully variable camshaft timing system, it is aimed at providing the performance of a typical 2.0-litre engine from a capacity of just 1.6 litres.

Autocar sources in Japan say the new engine is likely to come in two guises: a standard 160bhp model and a highly tuned 200bhp version aimed at matching the now defunct 2.0-litre VTEC engine in the Civic Type R. This more potent spec is likely to form the basis of a CR-Z Type R, tentatively due out late next year.

Plans for more than a hybrid engine for the Japanese Car of the Year come as sales of the two-door coupé have started to sag in the firm’s all-important home market.

Honda first hinted that it was planning to add another petrol engine when it unveiled the CR-Z Hybrid R concept at the recent SEMA tuning show in Las Vegas. Unlike the proposed production version, though, that car ran a turbocharged version of the CR-Z’s existing 1.5-litre engine rather than the new 1.6.

If this is true, I will probably be trading in my 09' Accord in for one .

Its unfortunate that they will never makes these as rwd or awd to take advantage of the power you could potentially produce with the turbo..

    Looks sexy though.

Massaging 200bhp with only 1.6 litres displacement is not a joke. Providing a factory warranty for this package underlines this.

    Do you like vanilla?

Honda made 160hp in 1990 and 185hp around 1998. And this was without a turbo using the same displacement! They might make a touch more torque with the turbo setup but they're no where near pushing the boundaries of performance. The added power will be quickly be eaten up by an increase in curb weight, although not exactly their fault given the new safety requirements.

Honda has completely alienated the true enthusiasts.

So GM getting 290HP from a 2.0 litre Ecotec engine covered by warranty wouldn't be a joke either then. Now it has to be admitted that it has a factory installed twin-scroll turbocharger, but still it's a warrantied 290hp out of a GM 2 litre engine. Reference.
    Will fuck off, again.

1st of all, this is all rumor.

Given CR-Z is failing hard being worst of both worlds, this will actually salvage it a bit.

But everyone will pick the more versatile Civic Si over this.

This is kinda sad. The best they can do with turbo is just very slightly better than they did 10 years ago NA. The turbo 1.6 should be 300hp.
Granted, it will likely get much better mileage than GM's 10 years late impressive motor, and this car is aimed at efficiency. This is embarrassing to Honda fans. But, they botched the NSX replacement, quit F1, and haven't advanced their k platform at all. Pretty rough being a Honda fan. At least with factory efforts. Private racers are doing really well.

LOL I think Honda is just completely ignoring the fact that their cars weigh a metric shit-ton more than the cars they made where 200 hp was at least somewhat respectable.

Makes me wonder about F1.........can you say pipedream haha!

Although Honda has made a < 2.0L turbo motor before that put out good numbers

I dunno what you guys are talking about.... that car STILL looks like shit. Honda's in general look like SHIT. There are so many better looking cars, with similar performance, that will be around the same price.

The bit about the 1.6t making it into an Accord?? I figure maybe this is the base engine? How does it expect to compete with a Sonata 2.0t making 276?? So the competitions' out there, why won't Honda one-up everyone?

I think for this little car, the 1.6t might make sense but seriously they could have a ton of people drooling over it if they just went balls out with a great engine/drivetrain combo instead of just making it 'ok'.
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!
