Default 2010 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport Coupe

Firstly let me start off by saying that this thread isn't even in the same league as some of the other awesome & extensive build threads in the beyond garage, that being said...

Two years ago I was not a Corvette guy at all, I had respect for their performance but that’s where it ended. Then my friend gave me a ride in his 2010 ZR1, that day changed how I thought of Corvettes….. needless to say the thing was bonkers fast, but it wasn’t just that, it was the seating position, the awesome handling, the noises it made and the looks it got that I fell in love with. Not being baller enough to afford a 125K ZR1 at 24 I started looking around at what I could comfortably afford and that meant something used…. 2008-09 Z06 or a 2010-11 Grand Sport where my two choices. I wanted the car to be my summer DD but what was very important to me was how well the car did at autocross from the factory, as we no longer have a track in Calgary autocross is the only performance driving I can do locally. After a lot of research on the Corvette Forum as well as looking through historical SCCA Solo-II results I discovered the Grand Sport was the better autocross car due to its specific gearing, yes I know it’s down 70HP and up 100lbs on the Z06 but in real life a 0-60MPH time of 3.6Sec (Z06) vs. 3.9Sec (GS) is not noticeable, besides the GS comes with a lot of the same goodies as the Z06; wide body, big brakes, hand built engine, dry sump oiling system…. So the decision was made: time to start looking for a 2010-11 Grand Sport. The pricing on them in Canada was substantially higher than in the states so I decided to buy down South; thanks to Jaymez’ awesome ‘How to Import Thread’ I was convinced importing was actually pretty simple. After months of searching I found a mint Cyber Grey 2011 that a dealer in Seattle that was willing to bring in for me (from Atlanta), after some background checks and negotiating the deal was made. Unfortunately once the car arrived at the dealership in Seattle the transport company quite literally dropped the car from the second deck of the transport truck Back to square one. Some more searching turned up a Certified Pre-Owned mint condition black beauty with only 2300 miles on the clock in Youngstown, Ohio. Again some background checks and negotiating and the deal was made, this time being deathly scared of transport companies I decided to fly down to Ohio and drive the car back myself. Here she is a 2010 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport 2LT w/ GS Interior Package & NPP Bi-Modal Exhaust (the only option I really cared about).

I flew down to Chicago (the nearest city that seemed remotely interesting to visit) in early May with my fiancé and we picked up the car in Youngstown, Ohio a couple days later.

After getting the car home the first order of business was to get rid of that front license plate bracket and get a 3M Clear Bra put on and while I was at it get the windows tinted, so after a quick visit to Shadow Tint….

The Escort Passport 9500ix is probably the single best thing you can get for yourself if you enjoy driving, I wanted to install mine as cleanly as possible so a Blend Mount and a Mirror Tap cord were a must.

This car has the NPP Bi-Modal exhaust which in case you don’t know opens two flaps in the exhaust at 3500RPM making the exhaust note go from civilized to angry. A Mild-2-Wild controller gives you full control of the flaps with a key fob type remote so this mod was a must.

The factory brakes are amazingly capable (14” 6 Piston Front & 13” 4 Piston Rear) but it was a shame that GM decided to use rubber hoses and DOT 3 Fluid, so a set of SS Lines and Motul Brake Fluid fixed that problem.

Seeing first hand just how much oil can get into the intake mani and on the valves thanks to the PCV one of the first things I did was a small catch can. ***I later ended up getting rid of this POS catch can and put in a proper one***

The factory Goodyear Supercar tires were atrocious as I found out after a couple autocross events, also with only 8000KM the tires were worn past the wear bars in certain spots (I blame a poor factory alignment, which Corvettes are unfortunately known for). A couple nice burnouts took care of what was left of the factory shoes.

A popular choice for tire replacements for Corvettes that are daily driven and also see some autocross/track driving is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, since I was upgrading tires I figured I might as well go a bit wider so I went from a 275/35/18 to a 285/35/18 in the front and from a 325/30/19 to a 345/30/19 in the back . After which an alignment to PFADT Race Engineering specs was a must so that I could hopefully get more than 8000km’s out of these $2500 shoes.

Since the tires were getting replaced I figured I might as well get the wheels powdercoated as I wasn’t a huge fan of the factory satin finish.

And some Carbon Fiber wrapped center caps of course

Everyone knows the stock Corvette seats are a joke for a car that can easily pull over 1G, while I decide on which aftermarket seats to get the interim solution was a CG Lock to keep my but planted in high G situations.

I hate chrome on all my cars so the chrome Grand Sport badges just had to go.

This is how she looked before I parked her for winter back in November.

Since I wasn’t driving the car I figured it was the best time to start doing some mods. Christmas for the Corvette.

The factory shifting mechanism on Corvettes was improved in 2008 but it still wasn’t as precise as I would like it to be, so after some research an MGW unit with a new race knob seemed like the best solution.

    Factory shifter

The spacing on the pedals is ok at best but far from ideal for Heel (ball)/Toe so a set of CCA Autocross Pedals should help with that.

    Factory pedals.

There was a deal on performance plug wires so I picked up a set as well as some Cool Sox (for when I eventually get headers).

I am very jealous! I never used to like Corvettes other than the looks until I started working for GM, and a GS Convertible is what I really want now.

I think a ZR1 spoiler in carbon fiber would look great on your car.

Nice looking vette. I'm liking your take on the blacked out theme.
Looks much classier then a cheap hot rod black spray bomb every
where. Good call on the catch can too..the LS series engines
get a gunked up manifold pretty quickly without one.

The C6GS coupe is one of my favourites. Especially in black. I would ask how you like the MGW shifter over the stock one... but I guess you haven't been driving it around much.

Nice build, I like the colour combination as well. Vette's are great cars, very capable platforms.

Reasons why Drumheller area wouldn't make a good race track venue...

The cool thing with vettes, as I'm sure you know, is that the car started life as a convertible so going from a coupe to a convertible you don't loose nearly as much structural rigidity as with most other cars that loose their roofs.

Yah haven't tried it out on the road yet but just switching through gears it feels much more precise, more mechanical, more direct. I hardly noticed a reduction in throw but the factory shifter didn't exactly suffer from long throws lol. The effort required to change gears is greater than stock but I like that.

I didn’t like the amber and red side markers but everybody and their dog just gets smoked ones so to be different I picked up a set of clear side markers with amber & red LED’s.

The inner ricer in me didn’t like the yellowish hue of the reverse, license plate, fogs and high beams so some new bulbs took care of that

    BEFORE

    AFTER

In an effort to keep things as clean possible the amber DRL/Signal Bulbs just had to go, in go some Stealth bulbs.

And with the black wheels a set of black lug nuts was a must.

Stay tuned, I'm in the process of installing some go-fast goodies.

How's that "catch can" working out? When I had my G35, I had actually used this one found on a corvette site and the build quality is great and internally has good bits too.

Either way, the build looks good so far!
