Take it for what you want. It's definitely no worse than spit balling macro concepts around that turn out to be wrong 99% of the time.

Wait a sec, so your shares in companies like Google, Microsoft etc that are held with TD will also be lost on the off chance they go tits up? I assumed those would be safe as you own the shares of those companies and would continue to hold them
Once the shares are settled, the brokerage’s solvency should not be a concern for your ownership… I would also venture a guess and say TD Waterhouse is a separate entity from TD, the bank

If you are using margin though, that would likely change things

No. People are getting confused here. Your investments are yours. They are not comingled with the bank's balance sheet.

99% sure Waterhouse is a seperate entity, like how RBC is a seperate entity from RBC insurance (which is Aviva)

I used to do waterhouse way back in the day. This could actually be wag the dog misdirection for some smaller US banks calling it quits. When one corp entity starts resorting to namecalling and fines, it usually means they are on their last billion.

"As of October 19, 2023, there were 4,049 commercial banks and 565 savings and loan associations in the U.S. insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) with US$23.4 trillion in assets."

They will probably get a bounce on earnings May 23rd. But this is a bear market stock currently. It's under the 200 day MA, and keeps banging it's head on the 200 as a resistance level. Initial perception for me when I hear how much short action is riding on this, is to go long on it. But chart wise it's an obvious short.
I went long 400 shares on Friday around $75. Figure it's a good long-term bet, though I may unload some shares in the short-term if there's a squeeze.

I don't see it going below $71 - and if it gets to $72 then I'll add a couple hundred more shares.

You guys are the only ones talking about a bank failure. Td can absorb any fine the sec throws at them.... td is the second largest bank in Canada.
The US Gov't and regulators dgaf about td. A td bank "failure" would look like the US regulators forcing td to sell its US business to another American bank.

Maybe a bit OT but not really given this all seems to be related to the Chinese running all sorts of deviant schemes through Canada - has anyone read Sam Cooper's book Wilful Blindness?

It's next on my reading list - if not just to support actual Journalism. https://www.amazon.ca/Wilful-Blindne.../dp/0888903405

Agreed. That's where I heard about him and the book.

A few weeks ago the Loonie Hour interviewed a guy in BC building electric semi's for logging that shared how scammy the BC NDP's subsidies to clean energy companies were. Not a shock but amazing to finally hear it publicized a bit.

Saw a post about anyone wanting to buy the dip on TD h
to research the Wells Fargo cross-selling scandal. Guess buying the dip for wells Fargo was a bad decision.

You hold td stock outside of an index fund?
Yes, and as of this moment they are up 21.25% for me.

EDIT - although that still makes them the dog out of my CDN bank holdings. BNS currently 23.31%, CIBC 32.79%, RBC 45.65%, so far I've only been up with all 4 and have decent dividend rates also. I am not very investment savvy but these have always made my self directed stuff look pretty good.
