Do you mean like Horizons swap ETFs? Ticker symbol "HXS".
That looks very close to what I am talking about. Thank you.

Their product sheet lists a clause of “ HXS does not recharacterize investment income as capital gains” so I’ll need to look into that a bit more.

I don't know what happened next, but yes the CRA doesn't appreciate these sorts of shenanigans and would really appreciate that you pay taxes because holy crap Trudeau II is a spendthrift.

Trying to setup some stuff in my daughters name, my understanding is dividends are no bueno and dad pays the taxes, but cap gains in a child’s name are taxed at her marginal rate?
RESP is your best bet then. You can always charge her rent if you want the money back later on.

Were you thinking of doing an informal trust? Instead, it looks like you can contribute one year's worth of TFSA room until they turn 18. That'll give you leeway on dividends.

I just want to make sure as little of my families money goes to the government as humanly possible within the confines of what is legal.

Without burning a ton of money on WM maintenance fees which is at least as bad as giving it to the government.

Well I'd definitely do the TFSA thing then.

There's supposed to be some one way to contribute one years' worth of TFSA room for under 18 but looks like not.

Family Trust? Seems like a pain in the ass, but worth it at some point I’m sure

You can set up an informal trust really easily and at very little cost, but as killramos mentioned dividends and fixed income are taxed which makes it a pain to maintain.

I think the solution is just move to Portugal and keep all my money.

Harper changed trust rules, mostly to piss off the Liberals. This change affected Trudeau's family directly. The Trudeau trust ends with Justin. So there's that.

So I'm guessing this is not good news? Should we expect share prices to go up or down as a result?
