Default No more Viper after 2010

Dodge to end Viper production in July '10, new car in 2012

At the Chrysler business plan meeting this morning, Ralph Gilles, CEO of the Dodge car brand, dropped big news on the Viper. After going back and forth for the past 18 months on what to do with Viper, Chrysler has decided that production of the current Viper will end in July 2010. Before that happens, 500 final cars will be built that, according to Gilles, will be the most special Vipers ever. Gilles explained that the company wanted to preserve the value of existing Vipers by not continuing the current generation indefinitely. He didn't give any details on what would be special with the final 500 cars.

However, Viper fans need not mourn yet. Gilles revealed that an all new car is being developed with a launch targeted in 2012! Even better the Viper will be getting some help from Chrysler's new Italian colleagues... and lets not forget about a certain Fiat outpost that uses a yellow-and-black Prancing Horse for its logo that's based in Maranello. Let's just hope they keep the Viper's elemental nature in the new generation.

so....they are not going to make Vipers anymore? Or just end the current version in 2010, and come out with a new one?

I'd hate to see the end of the Viper. It was my first "favourite" car...along with the Countach.

Maybe they are going to build the EV?

They did say at one point they were "seriously considering" it.

They need to revamp the Vipers Interior.. Then it will be a nice car.

I think they need to worry about the larger consumer market instead of the tiny niche. All those involved with the viper I'm sure could design a sports compact that would more than likely generate a hell of a lot more revenue than the viper does.

As much as I like the Viper, it's a smart business decision IMO.

, it was a glorified SRT-4 interior. Same plastic, same seats (basically, with different stitching. . .) and the whole design of the dash looked like it crawled out of a 90's Ford Taurus.

The next Viper is probably going to be 8C with a hemi in it.

As others have said, hopefully they get rid of the neon interior. I know the performance is great and everything, but for a $100+k car, the least they can do is put a little effort into the interior. I remember the one I sat in at the delaer had a rats nest of wires under the dash and driver's seat as well. I wouldn't even pay 1/2 the asking price of one of those things, but that's just me.

The 8C is a fantastic car, I'd like to see things go in that direction.

It's a very sad day indeed.. A definite icon in north american autos. Your badass styling and tire shredding insanity will be sorely missed.

The viper was long over due to be killed off. A company bleeding money at the speed that Chrysler is really can't afford a niche excitement vehicle.

I'm holding out hope of the ME-412 coming back. But I know that won't happen.

The viper was pooh anyways. It handled like shit, the interior was shit, and the motor wasnt anything awe inspiring but huge. I didnt mind the styling, but zo6> viper for 20K less. I'll take one in blue please. Besides which vipers were so poorly put together that the fit and finish didnt even make sense for a 30K car, let alone 100K. I went for a test drive in one with my dad a few years ago, and the dash was groaing during a low g turn. My dad said the steering felt unresponsive, the brakes were spongy, and the clutch engagement point (small issue) was to low with very little friction point. All I am saying is, it looked cool, but it was executed so poorly. I dont know if these issues have been rectified for units 02+ but I mean honestly, the viper has always been a 1/4 mile car, to bad we live in a world with left and right turns.

This is the begining of a very real revamping of american cars. I for one cannot WAIT for the japanese to take a beating. THere is something appealing to me about the american car scene being put on a pedestal again, instead of being second rate human recepticles.

Actually in the hands of a good driver they handled very well and always fared well in comparisons to the competition.
