I'm going to change over to synthetic I'm currently looking to get Amsoil 5w20 with the wix filter change. Any opinions welcome.

in my opinion the benefit of synthetics does not justify the increase in cost. Some engines will have increased oil consumption when using synthetics and it sometimes persists even after switching back. Happened to me on an H22

Really? Might give that a shot. My Mobil1 always comes out darker during oil changes but everything seems fine and dandy.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
Synthetics I have tried in the last few years:
Pennzoil Platinum:
Wow! Finally a synthetic that lives up to it's claims. It says that it "Removes 45% of engine sludge on the first change". I rea that and shugged, Sure whatever... until I changed it 4 months later.
Every other oil I put into the engine came out almost the same color... which never concerned me. This oil... it came out dark black, it had actually pulled out a huge amount of engine sludge. I have never seen anything like it.
Really? I love the Mobil 1. Maybe I should try this.Originally posted by Sugarphreak

I use Castrol Syntec 0W-30, it's the only Castrol available here, that's ACTUALLY full synthetic and not a blend. (Check the back, 0w30 says manufactured in Germany, all the others say Blended in USA). Crappy Tire has it for fairly cheap and goes on sale once in awhile too.

Was the Pennzoil used in your Honda?Originally posted by Sugarphreak
Synthetics I have tried in the last few years:
Royal Purple:
It's purple, it is a bit expensive... other than that I didn't find it any different than other Synthetics.
Mobile1:
Bought it because it was on sale... seemed fine.
Quaker State:
Seemed the same as everything else, I felt the Mobile1 oil was better though I have no tangible proof.

I use German Castrol 0W-30 as well.
Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula or Amsoil 5w-30.
Needs to meet BMW's LL01 specs, and only 2 oils do this! (Besides dealers oil, which is a castrol)

Pennzoil Platinium is a very similar formation to Shell Helix. (Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker State)
For a good bang for the buck synthetic try looking at the Shell Rotella T6 Group 4 synthetic (like GC) or the Chevron Delo or Esso XD-3. These are all "Diesel" oils but work fine in gas motors.
At the end of the day though, I am a Motul whore if you can afford it, definately one of the best oils out there.
Did you stick with the factory Honda oil filter or go with an aftermarket one? I assume the oil was bought ay WalMart? Time for an oil change in my Fit.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
I used all 4 of the oils I mentioned in the same Honda actually;
Basically the car was brand new, I changed out the oil with synthetic Royal Purple as soon as the first change came up.
After all the hype I didn't see any increase in mileage or power with the Royal Purple so I switched to Mobile1.
After running Mobile 1 for a while I tried Quaker State, didn't really feel it was as good as Mobile1 so I swtiched back on my next change.
Last year I tried Pennzoil, was a bit shocked at how much engine sludge it pulled out... took back the Mobile1 I had bought for the change and exchanged it for more Pennzoil, lol.
I even put up a thread over on FitFreak about it;

The best synthetics:
Mobile 0w40 only
Amsoil
Red Line
Rotella T6 may be good, still testing it.
Penzoil is junk and loses its viscosity really fast and contains way too many detergents.
Almost any oil you buy at your typical parts store is crap other than Rotella t6. Eneos oils are fantastic as are Lubro moly and Redline for Rotaries. The Motul 300v is also good stuff.
Looking for a new VW? How about a used vehicle? We are Central Albertas #1 source for pre-owned vehicles
I will beat any deal on a new VW for beyonders

There are a few oils available locally that meet LL04, why not run those if that's what you're interested in?Originally posted by scat330

I've used mobil 1, Motul 8100 and currently running Royal purple 5w30... motul really impressed me and I think I'm switching back on my next change... maybe i'll try the 300v next timeOriginally posted by JDMMAN
