Default Xbox 360 connecting at "g" not "n"

    D-Link DIR-615 Wireless

New Xbox 360 with Wireless "n" card.

On my router it shows all devices connecting at 802.11g and 54 M.

    I assume thats "g" speed.

How do I get both to upgrade to "n" speeds.

Router is configured to allow both "g" and "n"

Will it default to the slowest connection ??

I don't think you need to bother.

G at 54mbps is pretty much near the speed of your ethernet ports which are 100mbps. Even if you got theoretically 300mbps from N, it still has to slow down to talk to anything its attached to (most likely a wired cable or ADSL modem)

For streaming HD and general file browsing on the xbox the N is very nice to have. i have this router so i can answer any questions.

Now firstly, this is a wireless N adapter correct? 2 antennae?

Second. does it work when the router is force to N only mode?

Third. Is the Xbox running the latest dashboard? there is an update for the console for the new adapter so you must use the included CD or have the latest firmware.

Is it a dual band router?

If not, if you have any devices running on G on it, it will automatically downgrade all devices to G.... I think, been a while since I had to know anything about routers.

How far is the router from the Xbox. N has shit for distance.

The 615 does not have gigabit ethernet on the wired, so most of the benefit of N is lost. It will cap to 100mbits for all wired ports. And probably down to 5 to 10 mbits for a cable modem.

G has more reliable packets and longer distances anyhow. Would you rather have 46 more mbits - or have no stuttering because you are dropping packets with N.

N clients downgrade to b/g once they are too far away from the router (the simple explanation). If your client is connecting at 54 mbps using 802.11g then most likely your N client should be connecting at something higher using 802.11n. I would suspect it to the router or the router's firmware causing this. A lot of this information given in this thread is false.

Zenops, how is 54 mbps half duplex the same speed of 100mbps full duplex? The throughput of 802.11g is roughly 22mbps (assuming no other wireless traffic or interference), the throughput of 100mbps ethernet ports is closer to 90mbps.

Any instablity using 802.11n is caused by your client or router not in faults in the protocol itself. 802.11n is relatively new and a lot of the hardware supporting it, especially early 802.11n hardware, is buggy. In short, read forums on the device itself to verify others are having these problems and update the firmware on all devices.
