These are on clearance for $7.98 for the 2 pack at Home Depot (regular $16ish. Never tried myself but they look pretty good

I bought these and used the SPG on my brisket this weekend and it was "meh" at best. It was disappointingly bland compared to most other premixed salt & pepper based rubs. Good enough for the price but don't expect a game changer.

The worst part of these premix rubs is how much salt is in them. Rub doesn’t need salt, there is enough salt from the dry brine, and sauce, or whatever else you’re adding that you don’t need even more.

    Start with:
    50% Brown sugar
    25% Paprika

    The rest:
    Ancho/chipotle/chili powder (whatever you fancy)
    Garlic powder
    Onion powder
    Mustard powder
    Black pepper

Tweak and adjust ratios from there depending on the type of meat and preference. (ie. sage and thyme for chicken). Unless it’s beef that you want to taste like beef. Just add S&P 24hr ahead of cooking

Also MSG is good, it’s a myth that it makes you sick. You feel sick cause you ate deep fried garbage

And even if you did want salt in your rub, you should still make you own. Salt is under $5/kg.

That sounds alright, but at some point, the overall effort turns into growing my own hardwood to make my own charcoal and starving to death while starting the procedure of cooking meat.
There's enough pro's and variety to find a few to your liking and buy them. I'm not worried about MSG making me sick (never heard of that). I just think it's a cop-out that should be expected from fast food outlets in malls, not places cooking expensive meat.

“Chinese food syndrome” …old white people usually blame this on MSG

I don’t really think it’s a cop-out, freeing up glutamate in foods is something we strive for, you could spend more on some dry aged beef or you can sprinkle a little msg on there, same, same

The effort required for one trip to bulk barn is worthwhile for anyone who cares about meat.

If only there was a society with a specialization of labour such that experts in this field could produce these goods and offer them for sale to me so that I can spend more time being blown and less time in a bulk foods store watching street urchins stealing gummie bears...

Can you actually get even half of that shit at a Bulk Barn? I've never noticed a spices section in there. It seems dominated by baking items, candies and some weird hippie stuff from my recollection.

Hit up Superstore and look in the International Aisle. For some reason spices are in larger bags and cheaper than in the regular aisle.

Bulk Barn has its place but $/kg is usually pretty pricey. Plus I always end up in the candy section which ends well/poorly.

Good life hack. They even let whites shop in the international aisle.

Sunridge Rona has a bunch of Kamado Joe accessories on sale, got my cast iron half moon grates for $20 each instead of 60. They have a bunch of other accessories as well but I didn't have enough time to dig around.

Is bulk barn honestly worth it? All I see is a bunch of stale shit.

It's just easier if you are still in TPIM/kindergarten mode. Not better than other places and certainly not better than silk road.

As someone who thinks food in general is chronically undersalted, I don’t hate that most pre packaged spice mixes are fully of it.

Just my opinion. Salt is a big part of most of my spice mixtures I make but I don’t do big multi step seasoning routines either.
