Hey, I think drag racing is pretty dumb too.
Hey, I think drag racing is pretty dumb too.
A lot of people do; doesn’t mean I’d ever discount the legitimacy of it, nor the people that put the time, effort, and resources into enjoying it as their “thing”This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

@JustinL
Can you explain what that article was supposed to explain? It seems to me that they're saying:
"Many drifting fans drive the same cars as the competitors so this gives us an excellent chance to show them our best Falken tire for their cars slipping and sliding around like it was on oil and getting burnt to the cords in less than one hour".
Which is a weird thing to say. "Buy this $400 ultra grippy tire! Look at it skid everywhere!"
Don't get me wrong - I understand that drift cars are going to light up any tire and it's not a realistic demonstration of street performance. It just looks weird. Like if McDonald's showed dogs eating their food while they told us how good it tastes. But... A dog will eat kitty rockets out of a litter box... This doesn't make your food look better.
you guys are going to make me cry. let's have some positivity going into the weekend.

I'm a road racer not a drifter so I'm not typically sliding on purpose... so take that for what it's worth. Drifting is about getting lots of slip angle under very precise control, like getting very close to walls or another car. If you just want to smoke some tires, then cheap, hard, ultra slippery tires are what you want. If you need to have some predictability over a range of very high temperatures and retain some grip, then a stickier better tire is going to be a better choice. The high-end drift cars tend to run big power, but also reasonably sticky tires. Not full on racing slicks, but max performance summers or r-comps. Falken has decided there's a market in the drift culture and has gone after it by marketing the azenis tire to that crowd. That's a good tire for track days too because it can handle lots of heat and slip without falling off a cliff. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Well, shit. Good to know. Thanks. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I can't imagine setting $1200 in R-comp's on fire that quickly, but it does look like a lot of fun. I'm surprised a better tire offers much more predictability while sliding sideways and spinning at a few thousand rpm!
I didn't think they used hockey pucks, but I figured you'd want something intentionally soft, cheap, and made to be extra smokey. Something like a worn out snow tire.
Edit - let me +Rep you as well to keep @ExtraSlow happier headed into the weekend.
*Pardon delay as I apparently must recharge after giving Buster some, already.

News flash: people on the internet has difference of opinions. More at 11.
For the record, I love drifting. It’s too bad it’s not super popular.

Against the popular belief you want the most grip possible in a drift car. Super grippy tires and soft suspension with the most travel you can get in your chassis.
Pro cars are next level, the RTR Mustang that Von Gitten drives is basically a trophy truck with a mustang body
This is what drifting looks like.

I also follow figure skating, so that makes sense.
